Final Score: Florida State 34, Virginia 14
Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Jermaine Thomas ran for 122 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Florida State Seminoles to a 34-14 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in an ACC bout at Scott Stadium.
Chris Thompson added 76 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries to the Seminoles ground attack, while signal-caller Christian Ponder paced Florida State (4-1, 2-0 ACC) with 172 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Willie Haulstead grabbed five passes for 79 yards and a score as well for the Seminoles, who have won three straight.
Marc Verica completed 14-of-30 passes for 211 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss for Virginia (2-2, 0-1). Ross Metheny saw time under center as well for the Cavaliers and was a much more efficient 7- of-9 for 68 yards and a score in a fourth quarter effort. Kris Burd grabbed four passes for 118 yards and a touchdown through the air, but the Cavaliers were stalled by a virtually nonexistent ground game that amassed a mere 25 total yards. The Cavaliers have dropped two of their last three outings.
A 37-yard field goal from Dustin Hopkins gave the Seminoles a 3-0 lead early in the opening period of play. The visitors added a 70-yard Thomas touchdown run less than two minutes later. A 15-yard strike from Ponder to Haulstead early in the second stanza extended the Florida State advantage to 17-0, while a 10-yard scamper by Thomas midway through the frame gave the Seminoles a 24-0 lead.
With under 10 seconds remaining in the half, Hopkins connected on a 21-yard kick to send the Seminoles into the locker room with a commanding 27-0 advantage.
The Cavaliers finally got on the board early in the third quarter with a 76- yard scoring toss from Verica to Burd.
The Seminoles found the end zone again late in the frame following a 14-yard run by Thompson.
The final period was defensively driven, as neither team managed any points until the Cavaliers got an 11-yard scoring toss from Metheny to Colter Phillips.
FSU finished the afternoon an impressive 10-of-16 on third down, compared to just 3-of-13 for the hosts.
