Final Score: (10) Utah 68, Iowa State 27
Ames, IA (Sports Network) - Jordan Wynn threw for two touchdowns and Eddie Wide ran for a pair of scores as 10th-ranked Utah blew out Iowa State, 68-27, at Jack Trice Stadium.
Wynn completed 23-of-31 passes for 325 yards, while Wide rushed 13 times for 71 for the Utes (5-0), who piled up 593 yards of offense. Shaky Smithson threw a TD pass and caught another score for Utah, which held a dominating 31-0 scoring margin in the second quarter. Reggie Dunn ran back a kickoff 100 yards for a TD for the victors.
"Special teams gave us a big lift. Shaky Smithson was tremendous in the return game. Reggie Dunn is electrifying when he has the ball in his hands, so we had a lot of production there," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said.
Austen Arnaud connected on 13-of-31 throws for 178 yards with two TDs and a pair of interceptions for the Cyclones (3-3), who had won their previous two games.
The Cyclones struck first by capitalizing on a Wide fumble. Bailey Johnson forced the fumble, giving Iowa State the ball at the Utah seven. A short time later, Alexander Robinson was in the end zone on a two-yard run, just 4:14 into the game.
A 23-yard field goal from Joe Phillips got Utah on the board with 8:53 left in the quarter before Smithson returned a punt 78 yards to the Iowa State two. On the next play, Wynn threw two yards to Wide for a touchdown and a 10-7 Utah edge.
Jake Williams caught a 20-yard TD pass from Arnaud with 3 1/2 minutes left in the first, but Utah put up the next 34 points to take command.
DeVonte Christopher caught a 32-yard scoring pass from Smithson off a reverse, 4 1/2 minutes into the second. Matt Asiata scored on a one-yard run four minutes later and Wide's two-yard TD run made it 31-14. Smithson caught a 61- yard TD pass and Phillips split the uprights from 25 yards out on the final play of the half for a commanding 41-14 cushion.
"To tell you the truth, it happened kind of fast," Iowa State defensive back David Sims said of the game getting away. "I'm not going to dwell on what I did individually, but we didn't do it as a team."
Phillips hit another short field goal early in the third; and after Collin Franklin caught a 36-yard TD pass for Iowa State, Dunn went the distance on the ensuing kickoff with 7:40 left in the quarter.
Wide scored from five yards out before the end of the third, and Phillips made a 33-yard field goal early in the fourth. Sausan Shakerin scored on a one-yard run for Utah before James Capello ran in from 19 yards out to cap the scoring.
Dunn tied a Jack Trice Stadium record with his 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Oklahoma's Mark Bradley had a 100-yarder against the Cyclones on Oct. 4, 2003...Utah had been winless against the Cyclones in four previous meetings, all played in the 1970s...Utah coach Kyle Whittingham's teams are 6-0 coming off regular season bye weeks.
