West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Cortez Smith caught five passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Purdue Boilermakers to a 24-13 win over the Ball State Cardinals in a non-conference battle at Ross-Ade Stadium.
Robert Marve orchestrated the Purdue (2-1) offense, completing 12-of-20 pass attempts for 111 yards and two scores. Rob Henry also got involved, completing 3-of-6 pass attempts for 89 yards and a touchdown, while also leading the Boilermakers in rushing with 10 carries for 65 yards.
The Cardinals (1-2) struggled on offense as quarterback Keith Wenning completed 11-of-21 throws for just 89 yards and two interceptions. Kelly Page had some success in relief, completing his only two pass attempts for 17 yards and a touchdown.
Purdue took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when Marve hooked up with O.J. Ross for a 36-yard touchdown strike.
Marve went back to work in the closing minutes of the opening frame, connecting with Smith for a nine-yard touchdown, to give the Boilermakers a 14-0 lead.
Neither team produced points in the second stanza, as the Boilermakers went into the break with a 14-0 advantage.
Ball State responded on its opening drive of the second half with a one-yard touchdown run by MiQuale Lewis. However, the extra-point was blocked making it a 14-6 Purdue lead.
Purdue extended its advantage, early in the fourth quarter, when Rob Henry tossed a 76-yard touchdown pass to Smith to give the Boilermakers a 21-6 lead.
The Boilermakers made it a 24-6 game midway through the fourth quarter, with a 23-yard field goal by Carson Wiggs.
BSU answered the call on its ensuing drive with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Page to Connor Ryan.
Purdue was stifling on defense, limiting the Cardinals to just 256 total yards, while forcing two turnovers.
