Final Score: (25) Oregon State 35, Louisville 28
Corvallis, OR (Sports Network) - Jacquizz Rodgers scored twice on the ground and once through the air to help 25th-ranked Oregon State take a 35-28 win over Louisville at Reser Stadium.
Rodgers finished the game with 132 yards on 24 carries and added five catches for 22 yards for the Beavers (1-1), who had last week off after dropping their opener against TCU.
Ryan Katz went 15-for-26 with 142 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon State, while Markus Wheaton had a score on the ground and Joe Halahuni caught a touchdown pass.
"It is good to win," said Oregon State coach Mike Riley. "We'll take that every time. We don't really have to qualify it until tomorrow, and then when we look at it we can go back and look at some things we'd like to do better or differently. I was proud of the win."
Adam Froman was 22-for-38 with 288 yards and a touchdown, but threw a costly interception late in the game for the Cardinals (1-2), who were coming off a 23-13 win versus Eastern Kentucky. Froman added two rushing touchdowns with 46 yards on eight carries, while Doug Beaumont had nine catches for 121 yards.
"You're never pleased about a loss," said Louisville coach Charlie Strong. "I thought we played well but we didn't play well enough. You have to play for 60 minutes. You just can't give up plays on defense and offensively we had a chance to go down and win the game and we didn't."
Holding the ball early in the fourth, Froman and Beaumont connected on a 44- yard pass down to the Oregon State 2. On the next play, Cameron Graham caught a pass in the end zone to make it a 35-28 game with 13:16 to play.
An exchange of punts saw Louisville pin Oregon State at its own one, but the Beavers were able to move the ball out of danger. The team got into Cardinals territory, but were ultimately forced to punt.
The Cardinals managed only one first down and had to punt the ball back to Oregon State with under three minutes to play.
The Louisville defense stood strong and prevented Oregon State from advancing the chains and got the ball back with 1:33 to play.
Froman guided the Cardinals across midfield, but he was picked off by James Dockery and Oregon State killed off the rest of the clock.
Late in the first quarter, Louisville had to punt deep in its own territory and a 28-yard return by James Rodgers set up a three-yard catch in the end zone by Halahuni from Katz for a 7-0 Oregon State lead with 39 seconds left in the frame.
The Cardinals, though, answered on their ensuing drive as a nine-play, 80-yard march was capped on a 17-yard rush into the end zone by Froman to tie the game just over two minutes into the second.
The Beavers came marching back and took the lead on Jacquizz Rodgers' 13-yard touchdown run for a 14-7 lead with 8:41 left in the first half. Passes of 13 and 21 yards by Katz preceded Rodgers' run to set up the score.
The back-and-forth continued on Louisville's next touch as the team went 69 yards in 12 plays with a Bilal Powell 11-yard touchdown run tying the game with 3:38 left in the half.
However, James Rodgers returned the ensuing kickoff 63 yards and a Jacquizz Rodgers one-yard touchdown run seven plays later gave the team a 21-14 lead going into the break.
James Rodgers added another big kickoff return to start the second half as his 43-yard return got the ball past midfield and, four plays later, Katz hit Jacquizz Rodgers on a four-yard score for a 28-14 lead less than two minutes into the second half.
Louisville was forced to a three-and-out on its next touch and Rodgers continued to give Oregon State good field position as his 15-yard return gave the Beavers the ball at the Cardinals 40. Four plays later, Wheaton scrambled into the end zone from 28 yards out for a 35-14 lead early in the third.
The Cardinals put together an impressive 11-play drive that covered 84 yards on their next touch and made it a 35-21 game when Froman punched the ball into the end zone from five yards with under five minutes to play in the third.
Powell finished the game with 83 yards on 20 carries...Louisville outgained Oregon State, 453-319, and controlled the ball for 33:22...James Rodgers averaged 40.3 yards on four kickoff returns and 21.5 yards on two punt returns...The last and only time these teams met was in 2005 when Louisville took a 63-27 home victory.
