(Saturday, November 28th) Final Score: San Jose State 13, New Mexico State 10 San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Tyler Cope's 19-yard field goal with just 34 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner as the San Jose State Spartans captured a thrilling 13-10 win over the New Mexico State Aggies in a Western Athletic Conference battle at Spartans Stadium. The Spartans (3-9, 1-6) were paced by Jordan La Secla who converted 15-of-24 passes for 154 yards and a score, surviving four sacks and an interception in the final home game for legendary coach Dick Tomey who will be retiring at the end of the regular season. The Aggies (2-9, 1-6), who still have to face undefeated and nationally-ranked Boise State in the finale next week, were led by Seth Smith who gained a game- high 120 yards on 20 rushing attempts. Jeff Fleming made good on just 6-of-13 passes for 51 yards while he too was sacked four times and picked off once. The only points of the first quarter came on a seven-yard pass play between La Secla and Kevin Jurovich, giving the hosts a 7-0 advantage. Less than four minutes into the second frame Cope converted his first field goal of the night, a 46-yard effort to give SJSU a 10-0 edge. At the two-minute mark of the second quarter Fleming made his way into the end zone on a one-yard run to cut the deficit to 10-7, which is where the score stood at the break. In the third NMSU kicker Kyle Hughes locked the contest at 10-10 with a 24- yard field goal of his own, setting the stage for the exciting ending. The Aggies, who converted just 3-of-10 on third down, generated a mere 218 yards of total offense. 11/29 01:25:44 ET |
