NCAA Game Summary - S-M-U at U-A-B

(Saturday, September 12th)

Final Score: SMU 35, UAB 33

Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Bo Levi Mitchell threw three touchdown passes as the SMU Mustangs held off the UAB Blazers, 35-33, in Conference USA action at Legion Field.

Mitchell converted 28-of-47 passing for 353 yards and was picked off twice as the Mustangs (2-0, 1-0 CUSA) nearly let one slip away on the road this afternoon.

The Blazers (1-1, 1-1) were led by Joe Webb who threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third, but he was also guilty of four interceptions and was sacked once in the setback. Webb converted 18-of-35 passing on the day and carried the ball 18 times for a team-best 97 yards as well.

SMU ran out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter when Braden Smith scored on a seven-yard run and Emmanuel Sanders reeled in a 44-yard TD pass from Mitchell to quickly jump on the home team.

Just over a minute into the second quarter the Blazers responded when Webb found Frantrell Forrest with an 18-yard TD strike, making the score 14-7.

However, less than two minutes later Mitchell and the Mustangs struck again, this time with a 32-yard TD pass to Aldrick Robinson. Closing out the first half, Mitchell hit Cole Beasley to give the Ponies what appeared to be an insurmountable 28-7 advantage at the break.

The third quarter belonged to the Blazers as they scored 21 unanswered points, beginning with a one-yard TD run by Webb, followed by an 80-yard scamper by Mark Ferrell and a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown by Andre Hicks. Unfortunately, the PAT by Josh Zahn following the last touchdown was blocked, leaving UAB with a 28-27 deficit heading into the final frame.

SMU put some distance between itself and the Blazers when Shawnbrey McNeal carried the ball into the end zone from 19 yards away, with a successful PAT giving the visitors a 35-27 lead with 4:04 remaining.

Refusing to go away quietly, Webb moved UAB 60 yards on eight plays, in just 1:27 and with 13 seconds left he hit Jeffery Anderson with a 14-yard TD to make the score 35-33. However, Webb's two-point rushing attempt failed to convert and UAB was left with the two-point setback.

The Blazers turned the ball over a total of five times, SMU had four miscues on the day.
