Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - A 32-yard field goal by Ryan Payne with 30 seconds to go lifted the Louisville Cardinals to a thrilling 25-23 victory over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in a non-conference affair at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
Adam Froman completed 14-of-26 pass attempts for 248 yards and a touchdown to pace the Cardinals (2-3) in the win. Victor Anderson led the ground attack with 90 yards and a score on 14 carries, while Bilal Powell added 58 yards and a touchdown on just 10 attempts. Scott Long had a big day through the air with five catches for 146 yards and a touchdown.
Damion Fletcher and Tory Harrison ran for 86 and 75 yards, respectively, to lead Southern Miss (3-3) in the losing effort. Each back found the endzone once as well. Martevious Young, making his second career start at quarterback, completed an efficient 22-of-30 pass attempts for 229 yards. He was starting in place of Austin Davis, who will miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury that he sustained against UAB last game. Davis started the first five games and threw for 1,165 yards and 10 touchdowns prior to the season- ending injury.
A 36-yard field goal by Justin Estes gave the Golden Eagles an early 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals responded midway through the first frame with a 12-yard run by Anderson to claim a 7-3 advantage.
The Golden Eagles added a 21-yard Estes' kick late in the period.
Fletcher found the endzone from one yard out early in the second stanza for Southern Miss, and a 32-yard field goal by Estes with just 16 seconds remaining in the half gave the Golden Eagles a 16-7 lead at the break.
A 13-yard run by Powell midway through the third period pulled the Cardinals within two at 16-14, and Louisville earned a 22-16 advantage just minutes later following a 92-yard strike from Froman to Long.
A relatively quiet final period of play was interrupted with just over two minutes remaining, as Southern Miss took a 23-22 lead on a 13-yard Harrison scamper.
The Cardinals though, got a long kickoff return by Trent Guy and that helped set up the game-winning field goal by Payne with 30 seconds remaining.
