Final Score: Navy 16, Air Force 13 (OT)
Annapolis, MD (Sports Network) - Joe Buckley's 38-yard field goal in overtime proved to be the difference as the Navy Midshipmen posted a 16-13 victory over the Air Force Falcons as part of the competition for the annual Commander-in-Chief's Trophy.
Buckley finished with three field goals on the afternoon for the Midshipmen (3-2) as they won their second in a row and the third in the last for outings. Quarterback Ricky Dobbs ran for a game-high 92 yards and a score on 23 carries and completed 3-of-4 passes for 36 yards, but was also intercepted once in the triumph.
The Falcons (3-2), who had a two-game win streak snapped, were led again by the defense this week as Anthony Wright returned an interception for a touchdown for the second time in as many games. Quarterback Tim Jefferson, who returned from an ankle injury, converted 6-of-14 passing for 57 yards, while Savier Stephens carried the ball 17 times and ended up with a team-best 80 yards in the setback.
The only scoring of the first quarter came courtesy of Dobbs when he found the end zone on a 13-yard run.
At the 5:33 mark of the second frame Wright struck for the Falcons, picking off a Dobbs pass and returning it 67 yards to knot the score at 7-7.
Capping a 10-play, 42-yard drive that ate up nearly five and a half minutes, Navy eased ahead at 10-7 at the break when Buckley knocked through a 47-yard field goal.
Air Force kicker Erik Soderberg converted a 27-yard field goal of his own in the third quarter to lock the score at 10-10 heading into the fourth.
Buckley and Soderberg exchanged field goals in the final period of regulation, the Navy kicker making good from 37 yards away and Soderberg pushing the game into overtime as time expired with a 39-yard effort, setting the stage for Buckley's game-winner in overtime.
Air Force, which entered the week as the top rushing team in the nation with an average of 319 ypg, finished with just 183 yards on 53 attempts and struggled to move the ball while converting just 3-of-16 on third down.
With the victory today Navy has now won seven in a row over the Falcons.
