Final Score: (25) Nebraska 55, UL-Lafayette 0
Lincoln, NE (Sports Network) - Roy Helu, Jr. rushed for 83 yards and three scores as 25th-ranked Nebraska shut out the Ragin' Cajuns of UL- Lafayette, 55-0, at Memorial Stadium.
This was Nebraska's third Sun Belt Conference foe after opening the season with a pair of blowout wins over Florida Atlantic (49-3) and Arkansas State (38-9). The Cornhuskers rebounded after a 16-15 loss to Virginia Tech last weeks.
Cornhuskers quarterback Zac Lee completed 15-of-18 passes for 238 yards with one touchdown. Curenski Gilleylen had two catches for 85 yards and Rex Burkhead grabbed four passes for 26 yards and one score. Chipping in with a touchdown catch was Chris Brooks, who finished with three grabs and 50 yards.
"I always want us to play better," said Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. "I'm one of those guys who's never satisfied, but obviously I'm proud. Like I said, I think there are some good things that came of it. I don't get too high. I'm going to look at the film this week the same way I looked at it last week and that's to evaluate what we need to get fixed and work to get better because of what happened out there for both the good and the bad."
ULL (2-2) totaled 222 yards in offense to Nebraska's 433.
Chris Masson completed 13-of-22 passes for 102 yards and was picked off once for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Alex Henery kicked a 39-yard field goal midway through the first quarter and Ben Cotton recovered a fumble in the end zone later in the period for a 10-0 margin. Henery's 46-yard field goal capped the quarter.
"It just kind of snowballed on us from there," said Ragin' Cajuns coach Rickey Bustle. "That's a good football team out there. You come out there and hand them some plays, not a game, but you hand them some plays on a silver platter, they're going to beat you to death."
Nebraska (3-1) broke the game open in the second quarter. Lee and Brooks hooked up on a four-yard scoring strike with 12 minutes remaining in the period.
Just 49 seconds later, after a ULL fumble, Helu ran for a two-yard score. Larry Asante picked off a Masson pass which he returned 74-yards for a touchdown with 6:16 left until halftime as the Cornhuskers led 34-0 at the break.
The only touchdown in the third quarter was a two-yard run by Helu to make the score 41-0 with 8:36 remaining.
Backup quarterback Cody Green came in for Lee in the final quarter. His screen pass to Burkhead went for 24 yards and a touchdown with 11:04 remaining. Green then ran 24 yards to close out the scoring at 55-0 with 8:46 left.
This was the first-ever meeting between ULL and Nebraska on the gridiron. ULL knocked off one Big 12 team this season, notching a 17-15 victory over Kansas State on September 12th...Undrea Sails led the Ragin' Cajuns with 41 rushing yards and Ladarius Green had 68 yards receiving.
