Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Ryan Lichtenstein nailed a 41-yard field goal as time expired to lead the Syracuse Orange to a 37-34 win over the Northwestern Wildcats in a non-conference showdown at the Carrier Dome.
The Orange (1-2) were paced by Greg Paulus, who completed 24-of-35 pass attempts for 346 yards and two scores, while adding another score on the ground. Mike Williams was Paulus' favorite target, making 11 catches for 209 yards and two touchdowns.
Mike Kafka led the way for the Wildcats (2-1), completing 35-of-42 pass attempts for 390 yards and three scores. He also caught a touchdown in the loss. Drake Dunsmore led the Northwestern receiving corps, making 10 grabs for 90 yards and a score.
Syracuse got on the board early in the first quarter with a 43-yard field goal by Lichtenstein.
Minutes later, Paulus gave the Orange a 10-0 lead, when he raced into the end zone from 10 yards out for the score.
Paulus put the finishing touches on a dominating first quarter when he hooked up with Williams from 66 yards out to give the Orange a 17-0 lead at the end of one stanza.
Northwestern made it a 17-7 game when Kafka ran it in from three yards out for the score less than a minute into the second quarter.
Kafka went back to work minutes later when he found Andrew Brewer from 39 yards out for the score.
The Wildcats took a 21-17 lead late in the second quarter on a 22 yard touchdown strike from Kafka to Dunsmore.
Syracuse responded on its final drive of the first half when Delone Carter powered his way in from three yards out to give the Orange a 24-21 lead at the half.
The Orange took a 27-21 lead late in the third quarter on a 37-yard field goal by Lichtenstein.
Northwestern tied the game up in the final minute of the third quarter when Brewer threw a pass to Kafka good for a 24-yard score. However, a missed extra- point kept the Wildcats from taking the lead.
The Wildcats regained the lead early in the fourth quarter, when Kafka connected with Demetrius Fields for a three-yard touchdown pass to give the Wildcats a 34-27 advantage.
Syracuse responded minutes later with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Paulus to Williams to tie the game at 34-34.
The Orange took advantage of being the team that had the ball last, ending the shoot-out with a 41-yard field goal by Lichtenstein as time expired.
