Final Score: South Carolina 7, NC State 3
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Brian Maddox scored the only touchdown of the game as the South Carolina Gamecocks held on to defeat the NC State Wolfpack, 7-3, in non-conference action to kick off the 2009 campaign at Carter-Finley Stadium.
The defense for South Carolina (1-0) turned up the pressure against the Wolfpack (0-1), limiting the home team to a mere 133 yards of total offense on the night. NC State signal-caller Russell Wilson completed just 12-of-23 passing for 74 yards and was sacked a total of six times, resulting in a loss of 17 yards. Overall, the Pack managed only 59 yards rushing on 31 attempts.
For the Gamecocks, Maddox finished with 66 yards rushing on 23 attempts, while quarterback Stephen Garcia converted 13-of-22 passing for 148 yards, tossing one interception while being sacked three times in the hard-fought effort.
Capping a four-play, 14-yard drive less than six minutes into the first quarter, Maddox hit the end zone on a one-yard run to put the visitors ahead by a 7-0 score.
NC State was limited to a mere 41 yards of total offense in the first half and recorded just three first downs before the break.
Following a scoreless second frame, NC State kicker Josh Czajkowski knocked through a 43-yard field goal with just under a minute remaining in the third period. Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, the team never threatened the rest of the way.
Eric Norwood finished with a pair of sacks for the visiting team, giving him 24 for his career which now has him ranked second in South Carolina history.
With the victory the Gamecocks now own a slim 27-26-4 advantage in the all- time series between the programs. Last season USC opened their campaign with a more convincing 34-0 win over NC State.
