CFL Game Summary - Montreal at Calgary

(Sunday, July 1st)

Final Score: Calgary 38, Montreal 10

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jon Cornish rushed for two first-half touchdowns, as the Calgary Stampeders routed the Montreal Alouettes, 38-10, at McMahon Stadium.

Cornish gained 86 yards on 18 carries for the Stampeders (1-0), who built an 18-0 first-quarter lead.

Drew Tate threw for 299 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for Calgary, which lost the West semifinal in Edmonton last season.

Anthony Calvillo finished with 174 yards, one touchdown and two picks for the Alouettes (0-1). Montreal came up short in a 52-44 overtime affair in the 2011 East semifinal against Hamilton.

Rene Paredes converted a 38-yard field goal to give Calgary an early 3-0 lead. The Stampeders' defense then contributed on Montreal's ensuing drive, with Keenan MacDougall picking up a Jamel Richardson fumble and returning it 63 yards for a touchdown.

Cornish capped off Calgary's next series with a four-yard TD run and the team added a single later in the quarter.

The Montreal offense began to show signs of life in the second quarter, and Calvillo put the visitors on the board by hitting Brian Bratton for a 37-yard scoring strike.

Cornish scored from three yards out to put the Stampeders up 25-7. The touchdown came two plays after an unnecessary roughness penalty gave Calgary a fresh set of downs.

The first half ended with Montreal's Sean Whyte and Paredes trading field goals.

Following the break, Tate hooked up with Nik Lewis for a 13-yard touchdown, giving Calgary a 35-10 lead in the third quarter.

Paredes added a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
