GAME NOTES: The Toledo Rockets will try to recover from a difficult loss and keep pace at the top of the Mid-American Conference when they meet up with the Bowling Green Falcons at Savage Arena.
Toledo lost to Ohio 95-90 in overtime last time out, ending a six-game winning streak and pushing it into a tie with the Bobcats and Akron for first in the league (6-2). The Rockets still own the best overall record in the conference (18-3), thanks in large part to their perfect record at home (10-0).
Bowling Green put a stop to a two-game slide in its last bout, topping Buffalo 74-68. The Falcons are still below .500 overall (10-11), but the win evened their conference record at 4-4. Up next, they will host Akron this Sunday.
A year ago Toledo rolled to a 75-62 victory over Bowling Green in the only meeting of the season. The win ended a four-game winning streak for the Falcons against the Rockets, who lead the all-time series, 84-79.
Spencer Parker scored 23 points and Richaun Holmes (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Jehvon Clarke (11 points, 10 rebounds nine assists) each had double- doubles in Bowling Greens win over Buffalo. The Falcons limited the Bulls to 38.2 percent shooting, while owning a 42-37 edge on the glass.
When it comes to putting points on the board, Bowling Green is one of the worst squads in the MAC. The Falcons are netting just 63.5 ppg and shooting 42.4 percent from the floor. They are second to last in the league in scoring and eighth in field goal percentage. However, they have maintained a slight scoring edge on the season (+0.2), by limiting foes to 63.3 ppg. Holmes (!4.3 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 3 bpg) not only carries the feeble offensive efforts, he is also the anchor on defense, leading the conference in blocks. Parker (12.8 ppg), Clarke (12 ppg, 4.9 apg) and Anthony Henderson (11 ppg) are all important contributors as well.
After taking a 90-89 lead with 1:20 to play in overtime, the Rockets were unable to score again in falling to Ohio. Julius Brown finished with 28 points to lead the way, but he missed a 3-pointer in the final minute of the extra session.
While the Falcons have struggled offensively, the Rockets could not be performing much better. They are leading the MAC in scoring (83.5 ppg), assists (15.8 apg) and field goal percentage (.484), while among the top 25 teams in the country in each category. Brown (14.5 ppg, 6.6 apg) leads the team in scoring and is also the top players in the MAC in terms of assists. Brown gets plenty of help as all five regular starters are scoring in double figures as well. Justin Drummond (14.4 ppg) is the second best option, while Rian Pearson (13.7 ppg), J.D. Weatherspoon (12 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Nathan Boothe (10 ppg) all make their presence felt.
No team has been able to top Toledo at Savage Arena this season. The Falcons aren't likely to be the first, as they don't have the firepower to keep up with the Rockets.
