GAME NOTES: Fordham and its strong backcourt head to the MAC on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference test against the Monmouth Hawks.
Fordham boasts two prolific scorers in Branden Frazier and Jon Severe. Frazier, a senior, is leading the Atlantic 10 Conference with 18.7 ppg, while Severe has proven to be a capable second option in this his freshman year, as he is putting up 18.1 ppg. The duo combined for 26 points in last Saturday's 79-60 drubbing of Howard, while Ryan Rhoomes stepped up with a 19-point, 11- rebound performance.
Frazier is also leading the team in assists (40) and is right up there in rebounding (6.0 rpg) while Mandell Thomas provides a respectable 15.3 ppg out of the frontcourt.
The Rams have won four out of their last five, the outlier coming in a 104-58 demolition at the hands of St. John's two weeks ago. They lost their last meeting at the MAC in Dec. of 2001, but returned the favor with an 82-71 home win over the Hawks last season.
Monmouth has been up-and-down this season, which can be expected from a group comprised mostly of underclassmen. The youngsters have won their last two games, including a 74-46 victory over Binghamton last Saturday.
Andrew Nicholas had a team-high 13 points and Josh James provided 12 points off the bench for the Hawks, who limited Binghamton to 26.1 percent shooting and just 19 points in the second half.
Deon Jones had a rare off night with just eight points, which is less than half of his team-high 17.6 ppg. Jones also leads the team in rebounding (6.6 rpg), blocks (10) and steals (15). Nicholas has logged 14.5 ppg but can certainly up that by improving his .559 shooting percentage from the foul line.
The Hawks' roller-coaster season will likely continue unless they can figure out how to contain Frazier and Severe. It's a tough task, and not many teams have been able to succeed in doing so.
