GAME NOTES: Hoping to finally get back on the winning track, the George Mason Patriots host the Dayton Flyers in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup at the Patriot Center.
On Saturday afternoon, Dayton beat George Washington at home, 75-65. That victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Flyers.
George Mason enters this game having lost its last eight decisions, though that included two overtime losses in the stretch of futility. Most recently, the Patriots were outlasted in overtime Saturday at nationally-ranked Saint Louis, 87-81.
Dayton leads the all-time series 3-1 and has won the last three meetings. This will be the first meeting between the two schools as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Devin Oliver scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds in Dayton's win over George Washington. Jordan Sibert and Vee Sanford both tallied 13 points, followed by Khari Price with 11 points. Dayton shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and held a 38-29 advantage at the break. In the second half, the Flyers were a near-perfect 15- of-16 at the free-throw line as they secured the win.
Sibert (12.0 ppg) is third in the Atlantic 10 in 3-point field goal percentage (.434). Oliver (12.4 ppg) leads the team offensively. Dyshawn Pierre (11.8 ppg) has scored in double figures in 11 of his last 13 contests. As a unit, the Flyers are scoring a healthy 74.7 ppg, fifth-best in the A-10, and giving up 68.3 ppg. They are a very accurate team, topping the league in field goal percentage (.474) and are second in the A-10 in 3-point field goal percentage (.381).
George Mason pushed Saint Louis to overtime on Saturday. Bryon Allen posted a career-high 30 points in the effort, while Patrick Holloway supplied 15 points off the bench for the Patriots. George Mason had a 68-65 advantage in the final minute of regulation, but Saint Louis tied with a three-pointer with 44 seconds left. The Patriots missed two shots to win the game in the final possession before the game went into overtime, where the Billikens pulled away.
Allen (15.0 ppg) and Sherrod Wright (13.7 ppg) are the only two players averaging double digits in the scoring column for a George Mason club that is putting up 68.7 ppg, while permitting 71.1 ppg. The Patriots are keeping their heads above water with regard to rebounding margin (+1.7), but have been too careless with the basketball in turning it over 14.6 times per contest, second-worst in the conference.
George Mason hasn't won since the first week of January and has yet to register a conference win in its first season in the Atlantic 10. With the sharp-shooting Flyers coming to town, it doesn't look to get any easier for the Patriots.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Dayton 71, George Mason 63
