GAME NOTES: Winless on the road in three tries already this season, the Skyhawks of UT Martin give it another go this afternoon as they contend against the Florida State Seminoles in non-conference play at the Tucker Center in Tallahassee.
UT Martin dropped three straight games out of the gate against the likes of Wyoming, Colorado and Arkansas State, all while on the road, but on Friday night the team put an end to the slide. The Skyhawks dumped Rochester College, 79-64, for their first win of the season.
As for the Seminoles, they are off to a 2-0 start thanks to a 91-67 blowout of Jacksonville in the opener, followed by a much more competitive 80-68 triumph versus UCF on the road in the middle of the week.
The Seminoles won the only other two meetings between the schools, the latest being a 95-68 romp back in 2009.
Against Rochester College, the Skyhawks shot a disappointing 32.3 percent from the field in the first half and in fact trailed by three at the break, 33-30, after missing all seven chances behind the 3-point line. But in the second half Rochester converted a mere 1-of-10 on the perimeter, resulting in just 2- of-16 for the game as Martin grabbed the double-digit win. Myles Taylor came off the bench to offer up 20 points, followed by Marshun Newell who made just 2-of-12 from the floor but nailed all 10 of his chances at the charity stripe. Terence Smith and Bobby Jones stepped up with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Taylor missed the first three games of the season, which means the more productive player on the roster has been Newell with his 15.3 ppg and 14 assists, not to mention nine steals. Smith has added 13.5 ppg thanks to his 42.9 percent (6-of-14) shooting from behind the 3-point line and not necessarily his 33.3 percent from the floor overall. As a team, UT Martin is sinking 36.0 percent from the field.
Ian Miller came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points as Florida State posted a 12-point victory over the UCF Knights in non-conference action at CFE Arena. Miller shot just 1-of-6 behind the 3-point line for the Seminoles, but converted all seven of his free-throw attempts for the visitors. Devon Bookert accounted for 17 points, Okaro White 13 and Robert Gilchrist 10 points for FSU. The 'Noles forced 20 turnovers and benefited from UCF shooting only 11- of-21 at the free-throw line.
After two games the Seminoles have shown the ability to spread the wealth and delegate responsibilities to as many players as possible, resulting in five scoring in double figures and the same number of players pulling down at least four rebounds per game as well. Bookert leads in the scoring department with 16.5 ppg, followed closely by White (15.5 ppg) who is also first in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and has suffered 10 turnovers, with just a single assist.
Getting Taylor back on the floor will certainly be a boost for the Skyhawks, but still the visitors need major contributions from several others in order to keep this game close.
