GAME NOTES: The Morehead State Eagles try to string back-to-back road wins together for the first time this season on Saturday when they pay a visit to Tennessee Martin for an Ohio Valley Conference affair at Elam Center.
Morehead State won for the second time in eight tries on the road on Thursday, as Drew Kelly scored 15 points to lead the Eagles to a 75-59 victory over Southeast Missouri State.
Angelo Warner finished with 12 points, Bakari Turner and Bruce Reed each chipped in with 10 and Chad Posthumus pulled down 13 rebounds for Morehead State, which has won four of its last six overall.
Tennessee Martin, meanwhile, returns to the court for the first time since last Saturday when it was embarrassed by Belmont, 90-53. Myles Taylor led the Skyhawks' hapless attack with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Justin Childs tacked on 14 points as well.
The Skyhawks, who shot just 29.6 have now lost two in a row and nine of their last 10.
MSU owns a 29-13 lead over UTM in the all-time series between the two programs, and has won the last six meetings.
Although the Skyhawks haven't put many checks in the win column, Taylor has been on a tear of late. The reigning OVC Freshman of the Year set a career- high with 25 points two games ago against Tennessee State and then followed up with a double-double of 19 points and 13 boards to lead the Skyhawks to a win over Austin Peay. He leads the team with 16.8 ppg and 7.6 rebounds. Along with the majority of his teammates, Mike Liabo had a poor showing versus Belmont as he finished with just five points and two assists in 23 minutes, which lowered his season marks to 12.3 points and 2.1 assists a game. Taylor and Childs hit 10 of the UTM's 16 shots from the floor. Without them the Skyhawks combined to shoot a mere 6-of-29.
On the season Morehead State has been the second-worst shooting team in the OVC by connecting on just 42.0 percent of its shots from the field. Despite that the Eagles have managed to fit right in the middle in terms of points per game (70.7 ppg). Rebounding has been a strength, as they are second in the conference on the boards (38.2 pg). Milton Chavis (11.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg) is the only player on the roster scoring in double figures and one of four players bringing down at least four boards a game. Angelo Warner (9.4 ppg) is the second leading scorer but needs to improve his shooting (.348 FG percentage). Chad Posthumus (7.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg) paces the team on the glass.
Naturally, go with the Eagles here. UTM is extremely overmatched in this one, but could make the contest closer than it has a right to be if the team can manage to limit turnovers, a notion that has been quite lost on the Skyhawks this season.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Morehead State 77, Tennessee-Martin 57
