GAMES NOTES: In its second straight non-conference bout the Bowling Green Falcons will tangle with the IUPU-Fort Wayne Mastodons as part of BracketBusters weekend at Memorial Coliseum.
On Thursday Bowling Green ran by New Orleans, 87-56, to earn its fourth win in the last six games. The Falcons come out of the Mid-American Conference where they are just 5-7 this season, while posting an 11-15 mark overall. Playing on the road has been an exercise in futility for the Falcons who have just a single win in 11 trips.
IPFW was picking up some momentum in Summit League action with three straight victories before this bout. The Mastodons are also below .500 both in overall record (13-16) and against league foes (6-9). At home the Mastodons have earned nine wins in 13 tries.
These teams split the only two previous meetings between them. Bowling Green took the most recent affair, 86-70, during the 2004-05 season.
The Falcons had 15 more field goals than New Orleans and outscored the Privateers 27-6 from beyond the arc in the contest. There were 11 different players who scored in the game for the Falcons led by A'uston Calhoun and Jordon Crawford, who each put in 16 points.
The 87 points the Falcons threw up against New Orleans was their best offensive showing of the season. Bowling Green did score 84 points in an overtime loss to South Florida but has generally been a poor scoring team. The Falcons are putting in just 62.7 points per game and shooting at a 41.3 percent from the floor. The Falcons have still managed a positive scoring margin (+0.2) by holding foes to 41.8 percent shooting. Calhoun (15.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and Crawford (15.0 ppg, 4.3 apg) have been doing work to keep the Falcons afloat.
IPFW pulled off an upset against Oakland last time out with a 77-71 victory. The Mastodons put in great work on the glass and pulled down 11 offensive rebounds which led to 18 second-chance points. Meanwhile the Golden Grizzlies had just six points in second-chance opportunities.
The Mastodons' scoring numbers don't jump off the page. As a team they are scoring 65.7 points, assisting on 11.8 field goals per game. The Mastodons also shoot just 42.6 percent from the field, while opponents net 45.5 percent of their field-goal attempts. However like the Falcons, IPFW has managed to maintain a slim positive scoring margin (+0.6). Frank Gaines (19.2 ppg) is the most dangerous scoring option for the Mastodons and has scored in double figures in seven straight games. Luis Jacobo (11.0 ppg) is the second option, though he puts in just over 40 percent from the field.
This game isn't likely to have a ton of offensive highlights but with the combination of Crawford and Calhoun the Falcons should be able to earn a rare win on the road against Gaines and company.
