| NOTES: |
|
Winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. All times
Eastern. Last year, Louisville defeated Cincinnati, 50-44, for its second Big
East title. Louisville was the seventh seed, while Cincinnati was the fourth
seed. Connecticut (2011) and Syracuse (2006) were the lowest seeded teams to
win the championship as nine-seeds. Louisville reached the Final Four of the
NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual champion Kentucky, 69-61. Louisville
has reached the Big East championship game three of the last four years,
winning in 2009 and 2012. In 2006, Syracuse captured the Big East crown by
winning four games by a total of eight points. The Big East is the only
conference to have at least one team reach the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament
every year since 2002. This will be the 31st consecutive year that Madison
Square Garden will be the host. It is the longest running tournament at one
venue of any conference in the country. The top 14 teams qualify for the
conference tournament. Teams seeded five through 10 receive byes into the
second round. The top four seeds earn byes into the quarterfinals. Boston
College won two conference titles when it was a member, the last coming in
2001. West Virginia won in 2010 when it was a member. Patrick Ewing of
Georgetown is the only player to win two tournament MVP awards (1984-85).
