Maryland ousts Louisville to reach Final Four

Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Alyssa Thomas registered 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins past the third-seeded Louisville Cardinals, 76-73, in the Louisville regional final of the NCAA Tournament at the KFC Yum! Center.

Thomas shot 8-of-13 from the field and also swiped three steals for Maryland (28-6), which will take on unbeaten Notre Dame in the national semifinals on Sunday. Lexie Brown shot 9-of-10 at the free-throw line on her way to 20 points, while Katie Rutan added 12 points on 4-of-6 from 3-point range.

For Louisville (33-5), Shoni Schimmel poured in 31 points but also committed seven turnovers. Antonita Slaughter netted 16 points and Asia Taylor stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Louisville had control of the contest early on, taking a 36-32 lead into the halftime locker room and using an 11-2 run late in the first and early in the second half to hold a lead at large as seven, 41-34.

The Terps caught fire later in the second stanza however, using a 12-0 run to surge ahead. Maryland led by 10 with under a minute remaining before Louisville stormed back to trail by just three on its final possession, but Schimmel's potential game-tying 3-pointer in the waning seconds was off the mark.

Maryland shot 42.6 percent from the field on the evening and 25-of-28 at the free-throw line, which helped make up for a game-high 25 turnovers.

The Terps advanced to their first Final Four since winning the national championship in 2006.
