Germany completes rout of Spain in Davis Cup

Frankfurt, Germany ( - Germany completed a 4-1 victory over Spain in the first round of the 2014 Davis Cup on Sunday.

The Germans had already clinched the best-of-five tie with a doubles victory by Tommy Haas and Philipp Kohlschreiber on Saturday.

Kohlschreiber was scheduled to play in the opening reverse singles match on Sunday, but withdrew to give Feliciano Lopez a walkover win. It turned out to be Spain's only point of the weekend, as Daniel Brands finished off the German rout with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 triumph over Roberto Bautista Agut.

Spain, a five-time Davis Cup champ, played this weekend without any of its top four stars, as Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo and Nicolas Almagro all opted to sit out this tie. The Spaniards fell in the first round for the second straight year, losing to Canada last year.

Germany, which last won the Davis Cup in 1993, had lost to Spain three straight times and beat its European rivals for the first time since 1994.

Next up for the Germans will be an April quarterfinal against France, which topped Australia in its first-round tie this weekend.
