Fognini, Haas into BMW quarters
Munich, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Top seeds Fabio Fognini of Italy and long-time German favorite Tommy Haas found safe passage into the quarterfinals at the $590,000 BMW Open.
Fognini held off German wild card Dustin Brown 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, while the reigning champion Haas handled Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-2, 6-4 in 74 minutes on Day 4 on the red clay at MTTC.
The 36-year-old Haas was playing his first match since a fourth-round defeat at the hands of Roger Federer in Indian Wells, having been sidelined by a right shoulder injury since mid-March.
Haas beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in last year's all-German BMW final and was also the runner-up at this event 14 years ago. His quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be tough Italian Andreas Seppi.
Also on Thursday, the seventh-seeded Seppi drubbed Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos 6-3, 6-4, Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis saved two match points before outlasting Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) and Brazilian qualifier Thomaz Bellucci overcame fellow South American Federico Delbonis, of Argentina, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
The other quarters will pit Fognini against Bellucci, Berankis versus German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff and Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin against Slovakian qualifier Martin Klizan.
This week's champion will earn $107,000.
