(Sports Network) - Justin Verlander is back to his winning ways. Miguel Cabrera has dominated at the plate against the New York Yankees this season.
Those two stalwarts will try to lead the Detroit Tigers to a victory in the rubber match of a three-game series Sunday afternoon in the Bronx.
Verlander gave up 18 hits and 13 runs -- eight earned -- in road losses to the White Sox and Royals late last month, but has bounced back with impressive victories against the Nationals and Indians. In the two triumphs, Verlander has given up a total of two runs over 14 innings.
Over his career, Verlander is 5-5 with a 3.74 ERA in 14 games against the Yankees.
Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two runs scored in yesterday's 9-3 Detroit win. The reigning distant 29 games out of contention in the standings.
Coming off his first win in nearly a month, pitcher Martin Perez is set to face off against the Astros this afternoon. The left-hander had dropped two of his last four outings before coming out on top against the Angels on Monday in Anaheim.
In that contest Perez permitted just two runs on four hits, but also issued four walks, while striking out seven, over the course of 6 1/3 innings for his fourth win of the campaign.
Now in just his second major league season, the 22-year old is getting his first-ever look at the Astros today.
Fittingly, Houston plans to send out Dallas Keuchel to counter the Rangers in this Lone Star State showdown. Keuchel, who has faced off against Texas three times previously in his career but has yet to record a decision, took part in a wild 15-10 loss against the Boston Red Sox earlier this week.
The left-hander lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits and walk before being ushered out.
With Saturday's win, Texas is not only 9-2 versus the Astros this season, the club is also 35-14 against the rest of the teams in the AL West.
