Zimmerman, Nationals edge Phillies in 10th
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Zimmerman provided the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to give the Washington Nationals a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the middle test of a three-game set on Saturday.
Denard Span walked to lead off the 10th inning against Jake Diekman (3-3). Two batters later, Jayson Werth reached on a fielder's choice. After Adam LaRoche struck out, Zimmerman singled up the middle to plate Span and Werth scored on a wild pitch.
Zimmerman said there was no pattern to the pitches Diekman threw to the batters in front of him.
"I didn't know what to expect," he said. "I haven't faced him that much either. He got (two strikes) and left a fastball out over the plate enough where I could put a good swing on it."
Rafael Soriano struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th to earn his 22nd save of the season.
Werth homered, scored twice and had three RBI and Span scored twice for the Nationals, who ended a two-game skid.
Ross Detwiler (1-2) earned the win after tossing a perfect ninth. Starter Stephen Strasburg gave up just two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts over 5 2/3 frames.
Marlon Byrd drove in two runs for Philadelphia, which saw its five-game winning streak come to an end. Starter Cole Hamels surrendered three runs on four hits and three walks in seven innings of work.
Washington opened the scoring in the first. Span led off the frame with a walk, moved to third on Anthony Rendon's double to left and scored on Werth's groundout.
Rendon walked to lead off the sixth for Washington before Werth crushed a 2-2 fastball to right for a 3-0 Washington lead.
Strasburg retired nine straight batters after Grady Sizemore walked in the third. In the bottom half of the sixth, Jimmy Rollins got aboard with a single that deflected off the glove of a diving LaRoche at first base. Utley singled and the runners pulled off a double steal with one out.
Byrd got the Phillies within one after stroking a two-run single into left. Strasburg's night ended after allowing a two-out walk to Cameron Rupp. Jerry Blevins came in and got Ben Revere to fly out.
Philadelphia threatened in the seventh. Domonic Brown got aboard with a leadoff single. Tony Gwynn Jr. came on to pinch-run and moved to third on consecutive flyouts. Utley flied out to left to leave the tying run stranded.
Cody Asche singled and Rupp walked with two outs in the eighth before Revere's single up the middle tied the game at 3-3.
Ian Desmond laid down a bunt and beat out the throw to first to open the ninth. He moved to second on Bryce Harper's groundout, but Jonathan Papelbon struck out Wilson Ramos and induced an inning-ending fly out from Nate McLouth.
Diekman was ejected by home plate umpire Andy Fletcher after the top of the 10th ... Washington leads the season series, 5-3 ... Ramos' 14-game hitting streak came to an end after he finished 0-for-4 at the plate ... Asche extended his hitting streak to eight games ... Washington is 41-3 when scoring four or more runs ... The Nationals said the MRI results on pitcher Jordan Zimmermann were good. Zimmermann left Friday's start in the fourth inning and has a biceps strain, but no structural damage. He will be evaluated over the All-Star break.
