Colabello, Twins beat Rays in extras
St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Colabello's two-run single in the 12th inning lifted the Minnesota Twins to a 6-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in the second of a three-game set.
Joe Mauer opened the frame with a single off Josh Lueke (0-1) before Trevor Plouffe doubled to put runners at second and third. Colabello followed with a single up the middle to clear the bases.
Colabello, who also hit a two-run homer, tied the record for RBIs in the first 20 games.
"You start to realize how special this game is, how special the opportunity to be here is. It's certainly something I'll remember for a long time," Colabello said.
Eduardo Escobar and Sam Fuld finished with one RBI apiece for the Twins, who had dropped three of four entering the contest.
Casey Fien (3-0) worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings and Glen Perkins spun a perfect 12th to earn his fourth save of the season.
Matt Joyce doubled and drove in a pair of runs while Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria added one RBI apiece for the Rays, who had won three of four entering the contest. Desmond Jennings was 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored in the setback.
Mike Pelfrey started for the Twins and allowed four runs -- three earned -- over five plus innings. Tampa starter Jake Odorizzi was tagged for four runs on five hits over 3 1/3 innings.
The Rays jumped on the board in the first and added another run in the third to take a 2-0 lead.
In the first, Jennings singled, stole second then moved to third on Josmil Pinto's throwing error. Joyce then grounded out to first, but it was enough to push Jennings across.
In the third, Ryan Hanigan singled, moved to second on a ground out before taking third on a wild pitch. Joyce lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Hanigan.
The Twins rallied for four runs in the fourth. Plouffe opened the fourth with a walk and Colabello followed with a towering homer to center to even the score. Odorizzi then allowed back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases for Escobar, who lifted a sacrifice fly to right, ending Odorizzi's night.
Fuld greeted reliever Brandon Gomes with a single to right to bring Pinto around for a 4-2 lead.
Tampa Bay pushed a run across in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Jennings singled and Joyce doubled to put runners at second and third for Longoria, who chopped an infield single down to the left side to score Jennings.
In the sixth, Zobrist lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Wil Myers.
