Vandy names Derek Mason head football coach

Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Vanderbilt has filled the vacancy for its head football coach on Friday, naming Derek Mason the 28th coach in program history.

Mason has spent the last four seasons on Stanford's coaching staff, most recently as the team's defensive coordinator since 2011 under David Shaw.

The 44-year old Mason has led a Cardinal defense that has won consecutive Pac-12 titles and spearheaded Rose Bowl appearances in 2013 and 2014.

Stanford, which ranked fifth in the nation this past season with 44 sacks and seventh with 109 tackles for loss, was one of five teams to allow less than 100 rushing yards per game.

"Derek Mason is the leader we trust to continue the challenging but exciting work that has elevated the Vanderbilt football program to unprecedented heights," said Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos.

The Commodores have earned consecutive nine-win seasons and postseason Top-25 rankings for the first time in team history under James Franklin, who signed on to become the new head coach at Penn State.

"I am so excited to be at Vanderbilt," Mason said. "This university combines the best of what's good about college athletics and academics. We expect to be competitive and look forward to competing for an SEC East crown."

Before arriving in Palo Alto, Mason served as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings (2007-09), and coached wide receivers at the University of Ohio (2005-06), New Mexico State (2004), and Utah (2002).
