Kent, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Henniger finished with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Kent State Golden Flashes to a 72-59 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the M.A.C. Center.

Kris Brewer added 12 points and K.K. Simmons turned in 10 off the bench for Kent State (4-1), which takes on USC Upstate in its next matchup of the three- day event.

Tawaski King nearly had a double-double, scoring 17 points and securing nine rebounds while Brandon Boggs tacked on 12 points for Western Carolina (3-3), which is matched up with Niagara next.

The first half was brutal for both teams offensively. The Golden Flashes hit just 27.6 percent of their shots and failed to connect on any of their eight attempts from beyond the arc. The Catamounts shot a slightly better percentage (.281) but trailed, 27-22, at the break due to an 11-3 deficit from the free-throw line.

Both teams improved over the course of the second period as the Golden Flashes netted 46.9 percent from the floor to the Catamounts' 44.8 percent. Kent State once again had the edge from the charity stripe, 13-8, as it held on for the win.

Kent State owned a 49-39 advantage on the boards and a 38-26 edge on points in the paint.
