(Wednesday, January 22nd)

Final Score: Indiana State 65, Loyola-Chicago 61

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Behind an 18-point performance from Khristian Smith, the Indiana State Sycamores edged out the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers, 65-61, in a Missouri Valley Conference bout at Gentile Arena.

Smith shot 5-of-11 from the field and 7-of-8 from the foul line for Indiana State (15-4, 6-1 MVC), which bounced back from its first league loss of the season last Saturday at nationally-ranked Wichita State (68-48). Jake Odum and Brandon Burnett also helped out the visitors with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

For Loyola (7-12, 2-5), which has lost four of five, Milton Doyle poured in a game-high 20 points on 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Jeff White finished with 13 points and Christian Thomas scored 11.

Both teams shot poorly in the first half, with Loyola netting 37 percent of its field goal tries and Indiana State a meager 27.6 percent. The Sycamores took a 28-27 lead into the break by outscoring the Ramblers at the foul line, 8-4.

The Ramblers took a brief lead, 52-50, with just over six minutes left on a Doyle layup, but the Sycamores regained the advantage less than a minute later on an Odum bucket, which proved to be the game-winner. Indiana State put the game away by shooting 3-of-4 at the free-throw line in the final 17 seconds.

Indiana State held a firm 41-28 advantage in the rebounding battle and outscored Loyola at the stripe, 19-10.
