Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mamadou Ndiaye had a breakout performance to lead the UC Irvine Anteaters to an 86-72 victory over the Washington Huskies at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The 7-foot-6 Ndiaye scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds while serving as a defensive anchor for UCI (1-2) with nine blocked shots. Will Davis II also had a strong showing for the Anteaters with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor and Luke Nelson added 11 points to go along with six assists.
Washington (1-1) was paced by C.J. Wilcox, who scored 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Nigel Williams-Goss chipped in 13 points, five assists and three steals, but it was not enough to help the Huskies avoid their inaugural loss of the campaign.
UCI took a 38-36 lead into the intermission after it shot 53.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of the contest. The Huskies converted only 37.9 percent of their field goal attempts, but stayed within striking distance by knocking down 4-of-8 from 3-point range in the first half.
The Anteaters overcame a 10-of-24 showing at the charity stripe in the second stanza as they made 18-of-27 shots from the floor. Washington cooled off from the perimeter and went 2-of-8 from beyond the arc after the break. The Huskies managed to sink only 11 of their 27 attempts from inside the 3-point line in the second period due to the presence of Ndiaye, who swatted five shots and affected several more in 12 minutes after halftime.
UCI outscored Washington, 52-28, in the paint and assisted 20 of its 34 made field goals in the contest.
