NCAA Game Summary - Appalachian State at UMKC

(Sunday, December 16)

Final Score: Appalachian State 81, UMKC 71

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Tevin Baskin scored 18 points off the bench, leading four players in double figures, as the Appalachian State Mountaineers took down the Kangaroos of UMKC, 81-71, in non-conference action at Swinney Recreation Center.

Tab Hamilton scored 17 points, Jamaal Trice 16 and Jay Canty 12 points, to go along with six rebounds, as the Mountaineers (2-7) finally snapped a seven- game slide and picked up their first win of the season against a Division I foe.

The Kangaroos (4-6) were paced by Nelson Kirksey who knocked down all eight of his field goal attempts in order to finish with 18 points, while Estan Tyler registered 15 points and Thomas Staton 12 as the team bowed for the third time in the last four games.

A jumper by Hamilton at the 8:14 mark of the first half gave ASU a nine-point lead, the team shooting 50.0 percent from the floor in the period, but it had to settle for just a one-point advantage at the break, 33-32. UMKC managed to remain close after 20 minutes of action even as it shot only 2-of-11 behind the three-point line.

Both teams shot better than 60 percent from the floor in the second half, but in addition to that the Mountaineers knocked down 4-of-6 on the perimeter and outscored the hosts at the free-throw line, 18-10.

In a game that featured four ties and 14 lead changes, the Kangaroos hurt their chances with 14 turnovers and just 3-of-14 shooting from the outside.

The first win of the 2012-13 campaign for the Mountaineers came in the opener against Montreat (86-54), a program that operates at the NAIA level.
