Giants shoot for fourth straight win vs. Padres
(Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants will continue their three-game series versus the San Diego Padres Saturday from AT&T Park.
The Giants have won three in a row and four of their last five games, and took the opener of this series by a 7-3 score. Brandon Belt, Hunter Pence and Juan Perez all homered in the win.
"He's one of the more inspirational players that you can have on the club," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Pence. "He's full-throttle, the way he plays the game. He hit a home run on a big day for him."
Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong got the win with six innings of two-run ball.
Yusmeiro Petit looks to stay unbeaten when he draws the start for the Giants Saturday. Petit is 4-0 with a 2.84 ERA in seven games (6 starts) this season and did not record a decision in Sunday's 2-1 win at Yankee Stadium, where he gave up only a run across 6 1/3 innings.
The right-handed Petit is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in seven games (2 starts) lifetime against the Padres.
San Diego had won two in a row and three of four games until Friday's loss.
Burch Smith was dealt the defeat for giving up six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three batters.
"Burch hung in there," Padres manager Bud Black said. "No pitcher is invincible. Home runs usually come on balls out over the plate. He will realize balls out over the plate will get hit."
Logan Forsythe homered and Jedd Gyorko added three hits for the Padres.
The Padres will hand the ball to Eric Stults Saturday and he has a 10-13 record in 32 starts to go along with a 3.94 ERA. Stults has won two straight trips to the mound and defeated Arizona in a 4-1 decision on Monday, when he was touched for only a run over 6 1/3 innings.
In 16 career meetings (14 starts) with the Giants, the left-handed Stults is 5-4 with a 5.33 ERA.
The Giants are 10-7 against the Padres this season.
