NCAA Game Summary - Texas State at Navy
(Saturday, November 17)
Final Score: Navy 21, Texas State 10
Annapolis, MD (Sports Network) - Noah Copeland ran for a pair of touchdowns as
the Navy Midshipmen posted a 21-10 win over the Texas State Bobcats at Navy-
Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Copeland ran for a game-high 110 yards on 17 carries for Navy (7-4) as the
squad won for the sixth time in the last seven outings. Gee Gee Greene added
another 71 yards and a score on the ground as the Academy produced a whopping
407 yards on 62 rushing attempts.
The Bobcats (3-7), losers of four in a row and six of seven, were led by
quarterback Shaun Rutherford who completed 25-of-40 passes for 290 yards and a
score while shaking off two sacks in the loss.
The only scoring of the first half came courtesy of Copeland who capped a six-
play, 73-yard drive with a 15-yard TD run at the 8:42 mark in the first
quarter to give the hosts a 7-0 edge.
Late in the first half the Bobcats were able to work the ball down into the
red zone, but after setting up for a field goal the team decided to run a fake
instead, but the holder was taken down for a loss and the ball was turned over
on downs to the Midshipmen.
Texas State received the second-half kickoff, but it was fumbled by Jafus
Gaines which gave the ball to Navy at the 16-yard line. On the first play from
scrimmage Copeland made it into the end zone to make the score 14-0.
The Bobcats finally broke through with a 36-yard field goal late in the period
by Will Johnson.
Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Greene crossed the goal line
from 10 yards out for the Midshipmen to push the lead to 21-3.
On the very next possession, Texas State made things rather interesting when
Rutherford hooked up with Isaiah Battle on a 62-yard TD pass play, but the
Bobcats offense would not be heard from again.
For Navy, which entered the week ranked sixth in the nation in rushing with
274.3 ypg, the total for today marked the second-highest mark of the season
behind the 512 yards gained against East Carolina late last month.
