Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Kawaun Jakes caught a pass from Antonio
Andrews for a successful two-point conversion in overtime to give the
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers a thrilling 32-31 victory over the Kentucky
Wildcats at Commonwealth Stadium.
Kawaun Jakes led Western Kentucky (2-1) to by completing 16-of-22 attempts for
160 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Antonio Andrews was the
game's leading rusher with 34 carries for 125 yards on the ground and three
As for Kentucky (1-2), Maxwell Smith completed 37-of-60 attempts for 332 yards
with two touchdowns, but was also guilty of four interceptions. Three picks
thrown to Hilltopper defensive back Jonathan Dowling, who stymied the Wildcat
offense all game.
Smith threw his first interception of the season to Brett Harrington. On the
ensuing drive, WKU was forced to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Garrett
Schwettman to start the game with a 3-0 lead.
Smith threw another interception to Hilltopper's safety Jonathan Dowling.
The Wildcat offense struggles continued when they were stuffed on a fourth and
short. The Hilltoppers regained possession and punched it in the end zone on
a one-yard run by Andrews, capping a 12 play, 71-yard drive to put them up
On the next possession for the Wildcats, Smith threw another interception to
Dowling. Andrews scored his second touchdown after the turnover from one yard
out to give the Hilltoppers a 17-0 lead.
Kentucky's offense responded with an eight-yard touchdown run by Jonathan
George for their first touchdown of the game.
The Wildcats regained possession on a WKU punt and kicker Craig McIntosh hit a
47-yard field at the end of the first half, 17-10.
On the first drive of the second half, Jakes threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to
Willie McNeal, which gave the Hilltoppers a 24-10 lead.
Smith got into a rhythm early in the second half, capping off a 12-play, 84-
yard drive when Smith connected with Jonathan George for a 15-yard touchdown
to remain close, 24-17.
Smith made clutch plays throughout the fourth quarter and found DeMarcus Sweat
with a 22-yard touchdown pass to send the game into overtime at 24-24.
In overtime, George jumped over a WKU defender and scored on an 11-yard run
to put the Wildcats up 31-24.
The Hilltoppers responded with an Andrews two-yard touchdown run and converted
on the two-point conversion for the win. Jakes tossed a lateral to Andrews and
threw back to Jakes for the game-winning conversion.
It was the first time WKU beat a team from the SEC conference.
The Hilltopper defense held Kentucky to just 41 yards rushing.
