GAME NOTES: The Charlotte 49ers have made the trek west to take on the Saint Louis Billikens in an Atlantic 10 Conference clash at Chaifetz Arena.
The 49ers knocked off No. 6 Butler on Wednesday night, 71-67. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Charlotte, which at 6-4 is tied for sixth place in the conference standings.
After downing Richmond, 56-46, on the road last Saturday, the Billikens have won six straight games. They sit in a four-way tie for second place in the A-10, sporting a league ledger of 7-2.
This game marks the 26th meeting between Charlotte and Saint Louis, the latter of which leads the all-time series, 14-11. Saint Louis defeated Charlotte, 68- 67, in their last meeting, which took place at Halton Arena on Jan. 14, 2012. Javarris Barnett led four 49ers in double figures with 23 points. Saint Louis defeated Charlotte, 61-56, in their last game at Saint Louis on Feb. 19, 2011. Barnett led the 49ers in scoring with 17 points, and Derrio Green scored 13 points off the bench.
Dwayne Evans recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for Saint Louis, which defeated the Richmond Spiders last week. Evans was just 3-of-11 from the field and the only Billiken to score in double figures in the win. Kwamain Mitchell, Jordair Jett and Cody Ellis added nine points apiece.
The Billikens, who lead the A-10 in scoring defense, yielding a mere 57.7 ppg, also pace the conference in steals at 12.2 per contest. They are led by Evans in scoring at 11.7 ppg. He is also the top rebounder at 6.9 rpg. Including Evans, the Billikens have six players averaging at least 7.6 ppg, and three of them are in double figures (Cody Ellis at 11.2, and Mike McCall Jr. at 10.0).
Pierria Henry scored 17 points to lead Charlotte to an upset victory over 11th-ranked Butler on Wednesday. Willie Clayton and Chris Braswell scored 11 points apiece, while Darion Clark recorded 10 points and nine rebounds for the 49ers, who snapped the Bulldogs 12-game home winning streak.
On the season, Charlotte is shooting a healthy 45.6 percent from the field, and it has produced 68.3 ppg. Braswell is the team's top offensive threat, averaging 11.7 ppg. DeMario Mayfield (11.7 ppg) is the unit's only other double-digit scorer, but he was suspended indefinitely at the end of January. Henry, who is the team's primary distributor (3.7 apg), adds 9.3 ppg.
Saint Louis is the hot team right now, but Charlotte has a lot of momentum after its upset win over Butler. Expect a low-scoring game, but look for the Billikens to prevail at home and keep their winning streak going.
