GAME NOTES: The Charlotte 49ers try to continue their strong start to the season on Saturday when they welcome the Florida State Seminoles to Time Warner Arena.
After suffering their first loss of the season back on Dec. 14 to Miami, the 49ers have reeled off back-to-back wins over Kennesaw State and most recently, Radford.
In Tuesday's 68-52 win over Radford, Pierria Henry matched a career-high with 14 points. He was 6-of-11 from the field and knocked down a pair of 3- pointers. Henry also yielded a game-high five steals. Willie Clayton recorded 12 points and led Charlotte with seven rebounds.
The Niners' presence was felt down low as they dominated inside and registered 50 points in the paint. Charlotte also dished out 13 assists. That unselfish nature has been a trademark for the 49ers this season, epitomized most by Chris Braswell, who leads the team with 12.6 ppg off the bench.
Florida State, meanwhile, won its second straight game on Monday, as Okaro White tallied a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to help the Seminoles dismiss the ULM Warhawks, 63-48.
White connected on 12-of-13 from the free throw line and added a pair of blocks for FSU (6-4), which has won back-to-back games after losing its previous three. Freshman Aaron Thomas scored a career-high 17 points and Devon Bookert chipped in 10 points and four assists.
Florida State committed 19 turnovers against the War Hawks, but won the game on the line, as the Seminoles finished with 20 converted free throws on 24 attempts, while ULM went to the line just six times and made three of them.
Making the victory even more impressive was the fact that the Seminoles had to play without leading scorer Michael Snaer, who was apparently benched because of a discipline issue. Coach Leonard Hamilton didn't go into specifics, but did state that Snaer would be back in the lineup going forward.
Snaer has struggled from the field (.376), but thanks to impressive marks from 3-point range (.409) and the foul line (.816), he leads the team with 14.2 ppg. White brings 13.5 ppg and 6.1 rpg to the table, while Terrance Shannon adds 9.1 ppg and 6.2 rpg.
Although Charlotte has gotten off to a sizzling start, it will likely be overmatched by a Seminoles team that has started to find its way over the past couple of weeks. Not to mention Snaer could be chomping at the bit after his one-game suspension.
