Bayamon, PR (Sports Network) - Behind 19 points, nine rebounds, and seven
assists from Tim Frazier, the Penn State Nittany Lions were able to outlast
the Providence Friars, 55-52 in overtime, in a consolation match of the Puerto
Rico Tip-Off at Coliseo Ruben Rodriquez.
Jermaine Marshall was the only other PSU (2-1) player to tally double figures
in points with 13, but he shot only 4-of-18 from the floor.
Kadeem Batts recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds for Providence (2-2), but he
too struggled mightily, shooting just 2-of-12 from the field. Josh Fortune and
LaDontae Henton added 15 points and 11 points, respectively.
There wasn't much offense to speak of in the first half, as Providence took a
16-14 lead into the halftime locker room. Neither team shot higher than 27
percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Frazier scored nine straight points for the Lions late in the second half and
they held a 43-41 advantage with 46 seconds to play, but a pair of Batts free
throws for Providence tied the game. PSU had a chance to win the game in
regulation but a Marshall three-pointer was off the mark as the game went to
overtime.
In the extra session, Providence scored the first basket, but PSU went on a
9-0 run to take a 50-45 lead. The Friars would get no closer.
Providence was plagued by 21 turnovers, which PSU turned into 21 points.
