Notre Dame to face Maryland for men's College Cup

Chester, PA ( - Notre Dame will square off with Maryland in the final of the 2013 men's College Cup after both sides won their respective semifinals on Friday, with Notre Dame topping New Mexico, 2-0, and Maryland holding off Virginia, 2-1.

The Fighting Irish got both goals from Patrick Hodan, who put his side into the lead straightaway in the seventh minute before securing the win with a second goal 25 minutes from time.

Harrison Shipp was the architect of both goals and he set up Hodan's first tally after a turnover in midfield by feeding a pass to Hodan inside the penalty area for a left-footed shot that found its way inside the left post.

Notre Dame was disciplined in defense and gave New Mexico few decent looks at goal, while Shipp once again had a hand in his team's second goal with a low cross that Vince Cicciarelli turned off the crossbar. However, Hodan was on hand to head home the rebound, sending Notre Dame to the final.

Maryland will be the opponent for the Irish after the Terrapins got two goals from Patrick Mullins and were able to hold off a late charge from Virginia.

Mullins took advantage on a nice through ball from Mikias Eticha to lob a shot over the head of Virginia goalkeeper Calle Brown, who came off his line to cut down the angle in the 11th minute.

It was one of the few chances for either side in the first half, while Darius Madison tried to equalize for the Cavaliers shortly after the break with a shot that was tipped onto the post by Maryland goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

Madison struck the post again from a tight angle in the 65th minute, while Maryland went up 2-0 with another goal from Mullins after a clever chip from Tsubasa Endoh.

Virginia answered within two minutes as Todd Wharton converted a penalty kick to make it 2-1, leaving the Cavs with enough time to press for an equalizer.

And it nearly came with under three minutes to play as a shot from Brian James forced a diving stop from Steffen to preserve the win.
