NHL Game Summary - Ottawa at Montreal

(Sunday, February 3rd)

Final Score: Montreal 2, Ottawa 1

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Carey Price made 32 saves to help the Montreal Canadiens take a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday.

David Desharnais and Erik Cole each had a goal for the Canadiens, who have won six of their last seven games.

Montreal forward Max Pacioretty returned to the game just eight days after undergoing an emergency appendectomy that was supposed to have sideline him for 3-to-4 weeks.

"The coach made the right decision," said Pacioretty. "Actually the decision was made last night after I told the coach that I was ready. Maybe mine was more magnified because I had surgery. But everyone plays through injuries all the time."

Jakob Silfverberg scored the lone goal while Craig Anderson stopped 30 shots for the Senators, who have dropped four of their past six games.

Ottawa struck just 1:38 into the game on the power play when Patrick Wiercioch sent a lead pass through the middle and Silfverberg took advantage of the breakaway by snapping a quick shot over the glove of Price.

Montreal, though, answered just 35 seconds later as Pacioretty fired a shot from the right circle that was tipped by Desharnais on its way to the back of the net.

The Habs then took the lead with 8:31 to play in the opening frame when Francis Bouillon sent a short pass from the low left circle to the low slot where Cole lifted a backhander over Anderson for a 2-1 advantage.

Both goaltenders were busy in the second period as Anderson made 13 saves and Price stopped 16 shots.

Ottawa appeared to get the tying goal early in the third period, but it was waived off as Silfverberg was whistled for goaltender interference on the play.

"We thought it was a good goal but the refs saw something else," said Ottawa forward Daniel Alfredsson about the penalty. "We celebrated and then someone told us they were waiving it off. I don't think anybody anticipated that at all. The ref must have seen something we missed and made the call."

Price stopped 11 shots in the third period to help Montreal hold on for the win.
