NFL Game Summary - Jacksonville at Seattle|
(Sunday, October 11th)
Final Score: Seattle 41, Jacksonville 0
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Matt Hasselbeck made his return to Seattle's
lineup and threw for 241 yards and four touchdowns, as the Seahawks dominated
the Jacksonville Jaguars, 41-0, at Qwest Field.
Hasselbeck suffered a fractured rib in Week 2's loss to San Francisco and
missed Seattle's last two games, but improved over the course of the practice
week and made the start, completing 18-of-30 passes with no interceptions.
"I have to give credit to [head coach] Jim Mora and [offensive coordinator]
Greg Knapp for being flexible," Hasselbeck said. "I was late for pregame and
was late coming out of the locker room. Mentally I wanted to play and hoped
physically I would be able to. I was happy that I got to be with my teammates
out there today. We have not played our best football for us, or our crowd.
Today was a start."
Nate Burleson caught six passes for 98 yards and a pair of scores, while T.J.
Houshmandzadeh had five catches for 77 yards and two TDs - his first in a
Seattle uniform since signing with the Seahawks in the offseason.
Nick Reed added a 79-yard fumble return for a touchdown for Seattle (2-3),
which snapped a three-game slide.
David Garrard was 18-for-31 for 188 yards for Jacksonville (2-3), whose two-
game winning streak came to an end. The Jaguars suffered their worst defeat
since losing 44-0 to Detroit in their inaugural season of 1995.
"You gotta make the plays that are there to be made," Jaguars head coach Jack
Del Rio said. "We look to be better, obviously."
Seattle started off slowly, taking a 6-0 lead after Olindo Mare connected on a
47-yard field goal with 6:19 left in the first quarter, then made a 27-yarder
seven minutes into the second.
Jacksonville went three-and-out on the series following Mare's second field
goal, and Seattle put up a quick score. The Seahawks were faced with a 3rd-
and-11, but Hasselbeck found Burleson for 15 yards before going to
Houshmandzadeh deep down the left side for a 34-yard score.
After another Jaguars punt, Seattle needed just three plays for a touchdown.
On a first down from the Jacksonville 44, Hasselbeck aired a pass out for
Burleson on the right side, and the Seahawks led 20-0 at halftime.
Jacksonville got into Seattle territory on the opening drive of the third, but
Garrard fumbled upon being sacked, and the ball bounced directly to defensive
tackle Cory Redding.
The Seahawks turned that into another quick score while working with the short
field, as the recovery put them at the Jaguars 32. On the fourth play of that
drive, Hasselbeck completed a 13-yard TD pass to Houshmandzadeh for a 27-0
Another Jaguars punt led to another Seattle score, and Hasselbeck capped the
eight-play drive with a five-yard pass to Burleson.
Jacksonville then advanced deep into Seahawks territory in a drive that
bridged into the fourth quarter. But on third down from the eight-yard-line,
Lawrence Jackson sacked Garrard, forcing a fumble.
Reed picked up the ball and ran 79 yards the other way for the score, and
after a Jaguars punt, the Seahawks ran off the final 11:53.
"We just wanted a win," Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu said. "The score did
not matter to us. While we have played hard, we have not played consistent.
That was a complete team effort."
Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker was inactive for violation of team
rules...Jacksonville punter Adam Podlesh had a busy day, kicking eight times
with a net average of 45.5 yards. The Jaguars notched just 10 first
downs, going 2-for-13 on third downs...Torry Holt had seven catches for 95
yards for the Jags...Seattle had five sacks...The Seahawks host Arizona next
