NFL Game Summary - Oakland at Kansas City|
(Sunday, September 20th)
Final Score: Oakland 13, Kansas City 10
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - JaMarcus Russell was able to put a poor
performance behind him with 2 1/2 minutes to play and led the Raiders 69 yards
with Darren McFadden finding the end zone for the game-winner, as Oakland
pulled out a 13-10 win over the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Russell completed just 7-of-24 attempts for 109 yards, but was huge on 3rd-
and-15 with under two minutes left, firing over the middle to Todd Watkins for
28 yards. Two plays later, McFadden emerged from the backfield off left tackle
for a five-yard scamper inside the left pylon.
Kansas City had 1:07 left to work with following the score but a sack by Greg
Ellis on 3rd-and-1 disrupted Matt Cassel, whose fourth down pass fell
Sebastian Janikowski provided the rest of the offense with field goals of 48
and 54 yards for the Raiders (1-1), who dropped a heart-breaker to division
rival San Diego 24-20 last week but won Sunday despite 166 yards of total
Cassel shook of the early rust in his first game with Kansas City to throw a
29-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe with just over 2 1/2 minutes to play,
seemingly putting the Chiefs in control at 10-6.
Cassel ended 24-for-39 with 241 yards and two interceptions in his regular-
season debut with the Chiefs after sitting out the season-opener with a knee
injury sustained during the preseason.
Bowe caught five passes for 56 yards while Bobby Wade totaled 72 yards on six
grabs for the for the Chiefs (0-2), who were on the wrong end of a 38-24
decision in Baltimore in the season opener.
"It felt good today and that's why I was out there playing. I was happy to be
able to move around. I just wish I could have hit a few more throws. Some of
those I think I was a little rusty on," Cassel said.
Kansas City gained 409 yards of offense but it remained a game of field goals
until late in the fourth. The Chiefs embarked on a 72-yard drive with seven
minutes left with Cassel completing 4-of-5 pass attempts. He hit Wade for 12
yards on third down to reach Oakland territory and scrambled for nine yards
before connecting with Bowe on a fade route toward the left corner of the end
That left the Raiders with a daunting task of scoring inside 2 1/2 minutes
remaining after a subpar offensive showing. Nevertheless, Oakland took the
ball from its own 31 and produced the game-winning score.
A personal foul penalty helped the visitors cross midfield and Russell hit
McFadden for 11 yards. A pair of incompletions and a false start made it 3rd-
and-15 and Russell fired over the middle for Watkins to reach the 14. Another
short pass to McFadden then set up his own five-yard TD.
"I was always on an even keel," said Russell. "I knew that we left plays out
there on previous drives. I knew that we had to come up with something to come
out like we did."
The Raiders only crossed the 50 four times, on each of their scoring drives
and following an unsuccessful onsides kick from the Chiefs late in the first
Kansas City was able to put together a scoring drive on its second series of
the game but were limited to a Ryan Succop 23-yard field goal after trudging
74 yards in 17 plays. The drive ate up most of the first quarter as Cassel
kept the chains moving with an early third down completion to Wade for 16
yards. Jackie Battle gained three on 4th-and-2 from the Oakland 39 but Cassel
hit Wade for eight on 3rd-and-9 from the 13 and the Chiefs settled for three.
Meanwhile, Oakland had negative yardage before setting out on its first series
of the second quarter.
An 18-yard completion over the middle to rookie Darrius Heyward-Bey and a 17-
yard catch-and-run by Michael Bush helped move the Raiders 58 yards in 12
plays as Janikowski's 48-yard field goal tied the game with under five minutes
The Chiefs were plagued by poor clock management and wasted a chance to take
the lead just before halftime. KC set out from its own 29 with 2 1/2 minutes
on the clock and gained a 1st-and-10 at the Oakland 19 with 19 ticks left. A
short pass to Bowe yielded nine yards and the Chiefs used their final timeout.
However, no points were to be had as a dump-off to Dantrell Savage netted one
yard and ran the clock out.
Cassel was intercepted near midfield by safety Michael Huff straight out of
the break and the Raiders were able to cash in via a booming 54-yarder off the
leg of Janikowski despite another shaky series by Russell and Co.
The offensive ineptitude that dominated the first half carried over into the
third with the score remaining 6-3 heading to the fourth. The Chiefs, though,
began a promising drive from their own 30 that stretched into the fourth.
Cassel completed a 20-yard pass to Wade to reach midfield but shortly
thereafter Huff picked Cassel for a second time on a deep ball down the middle
intended for Bowe.
