Description: Daniel Bard has agreed to a minor league deal with Texas. SOURCE: Peter Gammons, MLB Network
Insight: Bard's fastball used to hit triple-digits on the radar gun but he hasn't been a factor at the big league level since 2011 when he set up Jonathan Papelbon in Boston. Bard is no lock to make the Rangers' Opening Day roster.

9/1/2013 3:22:00 PM
Description: Boston righthander Daniel Bard has been designated for assignment.
Insight: Bard was a stud reliever for the Sox a few seasons ago but lately he's turned into a walk machine (29 BB in 16 1/3 innings between the majors and minors this season). He still brings mid-90s heat so it's possible Bard could catch on somewhere else. Just don't expect much fantasy production when he does.

Description: The Red Sox have promoted relief pitcher Daniel Bard to the major leagues.
Insight: This move comes as a bit of a surprise. Bard has basically been in a downward spiral ever since Bobby Valentine decided to move him into the team's starting rotation a little over a year ago. Bard (0-1, 4.00 ERA in eight relief appearances for Double-A Portland) will join Boston's bullpen as another middle relief option alongside Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa, Andrew Miller and Clayton Mortensen. He won't be of use to fantasy owners.

Cold3/28/2013 5:16:00 PM
Description: Michael Silverman from the Boston Herald is reporting that Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard has been optioned to Double-A Portland.
Insight: Pretty tough to get any kind of fantasy stir going when you can't even crack the big league roster. A few years ago it looked like Bard would be the heir apparent to Jonathan Papelbon. Now it's fair to wonder if he'll ever be a productive major leaguer. Call it the Curse of Bobby Valentine.

6/22/2012 5:07:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right-hander Daniel Bard said Friday that he is no longer a starting pitcher, according to ESPN Boston's Joe McDonald.
Insight: Bard called Red Sox GM Ben Cherington to tell him that he belongs as a reliever, and Cherington agreed. Too bad Bard didn't come to that realization before he posted a 5-6 record and a 5.24 ERA in 11 appearances (10 starts) this season. He may have missed his only chance to audition for a closer role in Boston with Andrew Bailey out with a thumb injury.

6/5/2012 5:20:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox optioned starting pitcher Daniel Bard to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Insight: Simply put, Bard has been a disaster in his first season as a starter. The 26-year-old finished April with a 3.72 ERA in three starts, but since then, the right-hander has gone 3-4 with a 5.95 ERA. In his most recent turn, he walked six and allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings against Toronto.

6/4/2012 7:44:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox are expected to make a decision about Daniel Bard's future in the starting rotation on Tuesday.
Insight: There's no way to sugarcoat it: Bard was horrible on Sunday. He walked six, surrendered a towering three-run homer to Jose Bautista and he also hit two batters all in the span of 1.2 innings. His ERA has climbed to 5.24, his velocity is dropping and it just looks like Bard has lost all of his confidence. Daisuke Matsuzaka is close to returning and could absorb Bard's spot in the rotation if Bard is sent to the bullpen or even demoted to Triple-A.

6/3/2012 4:16:00 PM
Description: Daniel Bard turned in his worst game of the season Sunday in a loss to the Blue Jays. He lasted only 1.2 innings, allowing five runs, six walks and one hit. He also hit two batters.
Insight: Bard's control was nonexistent in this start as he just never came close to finding the strike zone. Surrendering just one hit is usually a positive but not when that hit ends up being a three-run homer off the bat of Jose Bautista. Bard was just awful Sunday and the Red Sox have to be wondering if the 26-year-old righthander is really starter material at this point.

4/22/2012 9:02:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox will skip Daniel Bard's turn in the rotation and have him work out of the bullpen for now.
Insight: Bard was slated to start on Sunday against the Yankees but the game was rained out. With Mark Melancon demoted and Alfredo Aceves currently sporting an ERA north of 20, this could be the first step toward Bard taking the closer role in Boston.

4/16/2012 5:48:00 PM
Description: Daniel Bard looked better in his second start of the season but the result was the same as the Boston righthander ended up taking his second loss of the year Monday against the Rays.
Insight: Bard ran out of gas in the seventh, surrendering a bases loaded walk to Evan Longoria to end his outing. Bard only allowed one run in his six and two thirds innings and his seven strikeouts were impressive but fantasy owners have to be concerned about all the walks he is giving up (seven walks Monday).

4/10/2012 10:06:00 PM
Description: Daniel Bard struggled Tuesday in his debut as a starter. The former setup man allowed eight hits and five earned runs in his five innings of action against the Blue Jays.
Insight: If you're looking for a silver lining, Bard was able to register six strikeouts while surrendering just one walk.

4/8/2012 7:53:00 PM
Description: After Sunday's extra innings loss to the Tigers, Bobby Valentine implied that Daniel Bard might be a possibility to fill Boston's closer void after all.
Insight: For years it seemed like Bard would be the heir apparent to Jonathan Papelbon so it was surprising that the Red Sox opted for Andrew Bailey in the offseason instead of Bard. Now that Alfredo Aceves and Mark Melancon are struggling mightily at closing out games, Bard may have to abandon his post as Boston's No. 5 starter in order to save the bullpen from imploding. We're keeping a close eye on this development. In the mean time, Bard is scheduled to make his first start of the season Tuesday night in Toronto.

4/3/2012 4:38:00 PM
Description: Daniel Bard will not be considered for the closer role if Andrew Bailey has to miss extended time.
Insight: Boston GM Ben Cherington said the team is committed to Bard as a starter right now, according to the Boston Herald. Bard would have more value to fantasy owners this season as a closer, but that won't happen at this time. Take a wait-and-see approach to his performance as a SP, as he has some upside in that role.

4/1/2012 2:39:00 PM
Description: Daniel Bard will be the fifth starter in Boston's starting rotation when the season begins later this week.
Insight: It's been an up and down spring for Bard (2-2, 6.57 in six games), but in the end, he secured the starting job, beating out Alfredo Aceves, who will likely be used as Boston's long relief man out of the bullpen. Bard has never thrown more than 74 innings in a season and his lack of a third pitch has been called into question, but he'll still be able to blow hitters away on a regular basis with his 100-mph fastball.

3/26/2012 12:02:00 PM
Description: Daniel Bard surrendered five runs on six hits in six innings on Sunday as he continues to battle Alfredo Aceves and Felix Doubront for the final two spots in Boston's starting rotation.
Insight: Bard has struggled with his control this spring, walking 13 in 18 2/3 innings while only striking out 11. His attempt to move from the bullpen to the rotation has not gone smoothly to say the least, but Boston's offense gives fantasy value to everyone in the Red Sox rotation, so we'll keep watching this situation with hopes that Bard replicates the guy who has struck out 213 batters in 197 professional innings.

Description: The Red Sox definitely courted Mariano Rivera and were ready to deal away Jonathan Papelbon to make room for him. SOURCE: ESPN
Insight: Many teams would jettison their closer for Rivera! Papelbon is likely entering his last year with Boston so if he struggles like he did in 2010 they will be more willing to try Daniel Bard instead.

8/25/2010 6:05:00 PM
Description: Daniel Bard helped Boston to a 5-3 win today by pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Insight: He has a 1.92 ERA this year and has been only of baseball's best middle relievers. There is plenty of speculation that he could be Boston's closer next year so keeper league owners should keep an eye on him.

6/9/2010 8:36:00 AM
Description: Bard recorded his second save of the season on Tuesday against the Indians.
Insight: Bard walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning. He got the ninth inning with Jonathan Papelbon out with a personal matter. (SportsBuff.com)
