Royal Liverpool gets 2019 Walker Cup
St. Andrews, Scotland (Sports Network) - The Royal & Ancient Golf Association announced on Wednesday that Royal Liverpool Golf Club will play host to the 2019 Walker Cup Match.
The matches will be played in September that year.
Royal Liverpool, also known as Hoylake, hosted a match between the United States and Great Britain in 1921. The following year was the first for the Walker Cup, and it was played in the United States.
"The members of Royal Liverpool are extremely proud of their rich heritage and the many memorable golfing moments that have been played out over the links at Hoylake," said David Cromie, the Secretary of Royal Liverpool Golf Club. "It will be an honor and privilege to host the Walker Cup in 2019, an event that will be the pinnacle of the 150th anniversary celebrations at the club."
Hoylake was the host in 1983 with Jay Sigel captained the United States team to a 3-point win. The club will host its 12th British Open Championship next year.
This year's Walker Cup Match between United States amateurs and a team of amateurs between Great Britain and Ireland will be contested at the National Golf Links of America, September 7-8, New York. The GB&I team won in 2011, but trails the overall series, 34-8-1.
