Parel soars to Air Capital Classic win|
Wichita, KS (Sports Network) - Scott Parel fired a 7-under 64 on Sunday and
cruised to a 3-stroke victory at the Air Capital Classic.
Parel, the overnight leader, finished 72 holes at Crestview Country Club at
18-under-par 266 and earned his first career Web.com Tour victory.
"Obviously, I'm playing well now," he said. "My goal now is to climb up [the
money list] as high as I can and a win is a good start toward it."
Alex Aragon shot 65 on Sunday and leapt into solo second at 15-under, while
first-round leader Alex Prugh took third place at 13-under behind a final-
Steve Wheatcroft failed to make a significant charge after beginning the day a
stroke off Parel's pace. He was even-par through 17 final-round holes before
notching an eagle at the par-5 18th for a 69 and a fourth-place tie. Camilo
Benedetti (68) and Franklin Corpening (68) finished alongside Wheatcroft at
Jace Long (67), Aron Price (68), Dustin Garza (68) and Chris Thompson (69)
shared seventh place at minus-11.
Parel had never held a lead after 54 holes in a Web.com Tour event prior to
this week, but he proved up to the task Sunday.
The 48-year-old began his round with birdies at Nos. 2 and 5 before stumbling
to his only bogey of the day at the par-4 sixth. Undaunted, Parel added
further gains at the seventh and ninth to wrap up his outward 32.
Around the turn, Parel recorded three straight pars before decisively padding
his lead from the 13th. A birdie at that hole gave way to a drained 45-
foot eagle putt at the next, and another birdie at the 15th wrapped up the
Parel parred out from there to make it official.
"All week long over longer putts I felt like I could make them," he said.
"From 20 feet and out I felt like I really had the speed and could really see
NOTES: Parel became the oldest champion at this event at 48 years, 1 month,
and 2 days. He also became the fourth-oldest winner of a Web.com Tour event
... Parel had made just three cuts in 10 previous events this year, and his
best finish was a tie for 34th at last week's Mid-Atlantic Championship ...
This week's purse is $650,000 with $117,000 going to the champion.
