| NOTES: |
|
The PGA Tour travels to Memphis, Tennessee this week for the final tune-up for
the second major championship of the season, the U.S. Open. World No. 2 Rory
McIlroy is in the field to prepare for the defense of his U.S. Open title next
week. McIlroy has struggled recently, missing the cut in three straight
events. It is the first time since he was 19 years old in 2008 that he has
missed three straight cuts.
The top American in the field is world No. 16 Zach Johnson. Johnson is coming
off a win at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial two weeks ago. He has
not missed a cut this year in 13 events. Johnson has a win and two second-
place finishes in his last four events.
This week's event has a storied past, as the tournament dates back to 1958.
Some of the previous winners include Tommy Bolt, Cary Middlecoff, Tony Lema,
Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Gene Littler, Jerry Pate, Raymond
Floyd, Larry Mize, Hal Sutton, Curtis Strange, Tom Kite, Fred Couples, Greg
Norman, Nick Price, David Toms and Justin Leonard - all major championship
winners.
Toms is the all-time leading money winner at this event with $3,545,123 in
earnings. He has finished in the top-10 seven of the last 10 years, finishing
4th (2002), 1st (2003), 1st (2004), 2nd (2005), T-10 (2006), 3rd (2007) and
T-2 (2009). Toms made 15 consecutive cuts, a tournament record, before missing
the cut in 2011.
This is the 24th year in which the tournament has been held at the TPC
Southwind. The golf course features eight lakes and three streams affecting
play on 11 holes, and also has signature TPC features, including spectator
mounding and other subtle land movements as well as bunkers and chipping areas
around small, undulating greens. Colonial Country Club's South Course
previously hosted from 1972 through 1988 while Colonial Country Club in
Memphis was the venue from 1958-71.
The beneficiary of the tournament's proceeds is the St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital. The tournament has raised more than $25 million for St.
Jude since the hospital became the sole beneficiary in 1970.
Last year, after 355 career starts on the PGA Tour, Harrison Frazar's wait was
finally over. Frazar parred the third playoff hole to defeat Robert Karlsson
and win for his first victory on tour. The 39-year-old had the sixth-longest
active streak without a win on the PGA Tour. Karlsson has finished second here
the last two years, losing in a playoff both times.
In 2009, Brian Gay fired four rounds in the 60s and cruised to a five-stroke
win over Bryce Molder and Toms. Gay finished at 18-under 262 and became the
fourth player to go wire-to-wire (no ties). The others were Dave Hill (1967),
Bob Estes (2001) and Leonard (2005).
In 2008, Leonard birdied the second playoff hole to beat Trevor Immelman and
Robert Allenby to win this event for the second time. Leonard also won the
2005 tournament. Leonard, Immelman and Allenby finished at four-under 276,
making it the highest winning score since the tournament moved to TPC
Southwind in 1989.
Woody Austin fired a bogey-free, eight-under 62 in the final round to capture
this event in 2007. Austin posted six birdies and an eagle for the best round
of his 13-year PGA Tour career. He made five birdies on the back nine and
finished the tournament with 49 consecutive bogey-free holes. In the end,
Austin stood at 13-under 267 for a five-shot win over England's Brian Davis.
It was his third PGA Tour win and first since the 2004 Buick Championship.
In 2006, Jeff Maggert fired a five-under 65 in the final round to pull away
and win. Maggert ended at nine-under-par 271 for a three-stroke victory over
Tom Pernice, Jr. The win was Maggert's first since the 1999 WGC-Accenture
Match Play Championship. Maggert finished with only 99 putts in four rounds
(25-25-24-25).
Leonard opened with a 62 in the first round of 2005 and led wire-to-wire.
Leonard struggled to a final-round 73, but held on for a one-shot victory over
two-time defending champion Toms. Leonard's final-round 73 matched the highest
closing round by a winner in tournament history, joining Hill (1967) and Toms
(2004).
In 2004, Toms became just the third player to win back-to-back titles, as he
finished at 16-under-par 268 and won by six over 2001 champion Estes. Hill
(1969-70) and Trevino (1971-72) were the only players to win back-to-back
championships before Toms.
Al Geiberger became the first player to shoot 59 in PGA Tour history back in
1977 at this event. At that same tournament in 1977, President Gerald Ford
made a hole-in-one during the celebrity pro-am.
Hal Sutton owns the record for the biggest comeback in tournament history when
he came from eight back to win in 1985. Dave Hill (4), Trevino (3), Price (2),
Toms (2) and Leonard (2) are the only multiple winners.
The PGA Tour, in conjunction with the USGA, moves to California next week for
the second major championship of the year, the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club
in San Francisco, where McIlroy will defend his title and try for his second
major championship win.
