| NOTES: |
|
The PGA Tour travels to California this week for the second event of the Fall
Series, the Frys.com Open. Three of the top 50 players in the world are
playing this week; however, the big story is the return of Tiger Woods, who
will play for the first time since missing the cut at the PGA Championship in
August. Woods has fallen to No. 51 in the world rankings and is out of the
top 50 for the first time since 1996. This is the first time that he will play
in a Fall Series event. Paul Casey is the highest-ranked player in the field
at No. 20. Former major champions Ernie Els (45) and Louis Oosthuizen (49) are
also in the field.
There are only three tournaments left for players to get inside the top-125 on
the money list and keep their card for 2012. Tim Clark currently sits at
No. 125; however, less than $8,000 separates Clark from David Mathis, who
is No. 129.
Last year, Rocco Mediate holed out for an eagle in every round, and he needed
every one of those strokes to earn the victory. After coughing up a three-
stroke lead in the final round, Mediate birdied 16 and holed out for eagle on
17 to shoot two-over 73. It was good enough to give him a one-stroke win at
15-under-par 269 over Alex Prugh and Bo Van Pelt. Mediate won in wire-to-wire
fashion, as he fired rounds of 64-65-67 over the first three days.
In 2009, Troy Matteson birdied the second playoff hole to defeat Fowler and
Jamie Lovemark. Matteson opened with a two-over par 72 in the first round, but
fired consecutive course-record-tying 61s in the second and third rounds to
surge in front. He closed with a final-round 68 to finish at 18-under-par 262
with Fowler and Lovemark. The victory was Matteson's second on the PGA Tour
and first since 2006.
In 2007, Mike Weir returned to the winner's circle for the first time in over
three years, as he carded rounds of 69-64-65-68 to win by a stroke. The
Canadian finished at 14-under-par 266, which was good for the victory over
Mark Hensby.
This tournament is being held at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin,
California for the second straight year. The course was designed by Robert
Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1999. Located 30 minutes south of San Jose,
CordeValle was named No. 7 on the list of best courses you can play in
California by Golfweek magazine in 2010. The first three years of the event
were staged at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The PGA Tour Fall Series moves to Sea Island, Georgia next week for The
McGladrey Classic, where Heath Slocum captured the 2010 title.
