Many of the world`s top players are in Shanghai this week for the final World Golf Championships event of the season, the HSBC Champions. Last year, it was a battle of the first- and second-ranked players in the world. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson played together in the final group, and it was Mickelson who took the title. He posted a three-under 69 in the final round to earn a one-shot win over the hard-charging Ernie Els, who fired a 63 in the final round. Woods was four-over par after eight holes, but fought back to shoot a 72, which left him tied for sixth place. A lot has changed for both players since then. Woods has endured a winless season, personal turmoil and lost the No. 1 world ranking to Lee Westwood on Monday. Mickelson, who has continued to support his wife, Amy, and his mother in their battles with breast cancer, was diagnosed with a psoriatic arthritis. He said the arthritis "quickly spread from his ankle, finger and wrist to his hips, elbows and shoulders." The 40-year-old has won just once since leaving Shanghai with the trophy last year. That title came at the Masters, of course, where he hit a memorable shot out of the trees on the 13th to set up a birdie, which gave him a two-shot margin and he went on to win by three. Since Augusta, Mickelson has four other top-eight finishes, including a tie for fourth at the U.S. Open, but he also missed three cuts. Westwood and British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen are both in the field this week at Sheshan, but both are battling injuries as well. Westwood is still fighting a leg injury, while Oosthuizen injured his ankle a month ago and hasn`t played since. The field also includes seven of the top 10 players in the world rankings and 20 of the top 30. Golf Channel will have live coverage from midnight to 4 a.m. (et) on all four days. Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Florida for the final event of the Fall Series, the Children`s Miracle Network Classic. Defending champion Stephen Ames is going to miss the event because of a back injury. The European Tour continues its late season swing in Asia with the Barclays Singapore Open, where Ian Poulter will defend his title.
