NOTES
Zach Johnson won last year`s Texas Open when it was part of the Fall Series. Johnson scorched the Resort Course at La Cantera for scores of 62 and 64 in the last two rounds, winning by two shots over Mark Wilson, Charlie Wi and Tim Wilkinson. The October win marked Johnson`s fourth PGA Tour title, but first outside the state of Georgia. In addition to claiming his first major at the 2007 Masters, he previously had won the AT&T Classic twice. Johnson, who will defend his title this week at La Cantera, picked up win No. 5 earlier this season at the Sony Open in Hawaii, his second straight victory outside of Georgia. Coming on the heels of the Players Championship, the 79th Texas Open field will be missing most of the world`s top players. Among those who will appear, however, are Johnson and three-time Texas Open winner Justin Leonard. Eric Axley (2006), Robert Gamez (2005) and Bart Bryant (2004) are the other recent winners who will be in the field. Among the champions since Leonard won back-to-back Texas Opens in 2000-01, only 49-year-old Tommy Armour III and 53-year-old Champions Tour regular Loren Roberts won`t play this week. The Golf Channel will have three hours of coverage on the first two days, while CBS will broadcast for three hours on both weekend days. Next week is the Byron Nelson Championship, where Adam Scott holed a 48-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole to beat Ryan Moore last year.
