Tiger Woods
The first World Golf Championships event welcomes back its defending champion, Tiger Woods, as does the rest of the PGA Tour. Woods has been absent since defeating Rocco Mediate in the U.S. Open playoff last June. He underwent surgery on his left knee for a torn ACL and a pair of stress fractures. Last year, Woods took down Ryder Cup teammates Stewart Cink, 8 & 7, in the finals. Woods, a three-time Match Play winner, will be returning to the course after the longest layoff of his career. He will face Brendan Jones in his first match. The Bobby Jones bracket, in which Woods is the top seed, includes one former Ryder Cupper -- Hunter Mahan -- and four former major champions: Retief Goosen, Mike Weir, Geoff Ogilvy and Trevor Immelman. The other top seeds are Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington and Vijay Singh. Singh tops the Ben Hogan bracket. The winner of that bracket would face the winner of Woods` bracket in the semifinals of this event. Also in Singh`s bracket are five other major champions and nine past former Ryder Cup performers. Garcia`s bracket includes six former Ryder Cup performers and three Australians, including Adam Scott and Aaron Baddeley. Harrington could possibly face the likes of Jim Furyk, Henrik Stenson, Andres Romero or Anthony Kim en route to the semifinals. The event, which starts on Wednesday, shifts to a new course this year. The event remains at the Dove Mountain resort, but will now be played at the Ritz- Carlton Golf Club. Last year`s event was contested at the Gallery Golf Club. The Golf Channel will have extensive coverage the first three days of the championship, before handing off to NBC for the final two days. The PGA Tour begins its Florida swing next week with the Honda Classic, where Ernie Els is the defending champion. The European Tour is off next week before returning the following week with the second WGC event of the year.
