NCAA Game Summary - Tennessee Tech at TCU
(Saturday, September 11th)
Final Score: (4) TCU 62, Tennessee Tech 7
Fort Worth, TX (Sports Network) - Andy Dalton threw for 182 yards and a score and Matthew Tucker rushed for two touchdowns, as fourth-ranked TCU ran over Tennessee Tech, 62-7, at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
Dalton completed 15-of-21 passes and also ran for a touchdown for the Horned Frogs (2-0), who compiled 270 rushing yards. Ed Wesley, Waymon James, Ryan Hightower and Jeremy Kerley also ran for a score in the victory.
The blowout win comes a week after TCU survived in a 30-21 victory over Oregon State, though TCU head coach Gary Patterson apologized after the game for scoring so many points.
"I didn't want to score that last touchdown on Tennessee Tech," Patterson said. "We don't do style points. We didn't throw the ball in the fourth quarter. We tried not to do that. That's not the program we are. I did not want to score 60."
Tre Lamb threw for 50 yards and a touchdown for the Golden Eagles (0-2), an FCS team that was coming off last week's 44-3 loss at Arkansas.
"TCU is really good. I have a very tired team right now," said Tennessee Tech head coach Watson Brown. "You just can't turn the ball over five times. They executed really well and knocked the fool out of us. Each turnover was when we ran the ball and they just popped us. The combination of turnovers and them being very good, it was just too much."
The domination started early, as Dalton struck on a 24-yard touchdown pass to Josh Boyce on TCU's opening possession. After a Tennessee Tech punt, Tucker's three-yard run capped an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive by the Horned Frogs.
Cornerback Jason Teague intercepted Lamb on the Eagles' next possession, running it back 29 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead.
Tennessee Tech countered with a scoring drive, as Lamb found running back Tremaine Hudson for an 11-yard touchdown. That ended an eight-play, 72-yard march shortly into the second quarter.
But the TCU defense clamped down from there. Of Tennessee Tech's 10 remaining drives, five ended in a punt and four were done in by a fumble.
Teague forced a Cass Barnes fumble late in the first half, and that led to a five-yard TD run by Kerley. Doug Page fumbled on the first play of Tech's next touch, which led to Tucker's one-yard plunge and a 35-7 halftime lead for the Horned Frogs.
Shortly into the third quarter, another Golden Eagles fumble set up another TCU touchdown. Running back Jocques Crawford fumbled it away, and the Horned Frogs took over at the Eagles' 36-yard line. Dalton converted the scoring chance that time, taking it into the end zone from 19 yards out, though a missed extra point kept TCU's lead at 41-7.
The Horned Frogs tacked on 21 more points in the fourth quarter, on touchdown runs from Wesley (seven yards), James (15) and Hightower (16).
TCU extended its home winning streak to 15 games...Wesley led the Horned Frogs with 85 rushing yards...Tennessee Tech totaled 150 yards of offense...The Golden Eagles fumbled six times, losing four...TCU hosts Baylor next Saturday.
