NCAA Game Summary - Colorado State at Utah State
(Saturday, September 24th)
Final Score: Colorado State 35, Utah State 34 (2OT)
Logan, UT (Sports Network) - The Utah State Aggies gambled in the second
overtime and ended up coming out on the short end of a 35-34 decision against
the Colorado State Rams in non-conference action at Romney Stadium.
After the teams scored touchdowns in both of the overtime periods, the Aggies
(1-2) decided to go for it all and attempt a two-point conversion, rather than
kick the obligatory PAT and take their chances in a third overtime session.
USU tried to end the game with a pass into the end zone for the proposed two-
point conversion, but a pass interference call caused the pass to fail, yet
subsequently moved the ball to the one-yard line.
On the next attempt Utah State kept the ball on the ground, handing it to
running back Robert Turbin who was stood up and pushed out of bounds, giving
the win to the Rams (3-1).
Turbin finished the contest with a game-high 115 yards and four touchdowns on
24 carries, while quarterback Chuckie Keaton hit on just 9-of-15 passes for 86
yards and was sacked three times.
Colorado State was paced by Chris Nwoke who gained 85 yards and hit the end
zone twice on 24 rushing attempts, while Pete Thomas threw for a mere 108
yards on 16-of-28, while being sacked four times on the night.
After a scoreless first quarter USU struck first on a 14-yard TD run by
Kerwynn Williams to make the score 7-0 for the hosts.
With only 33 seconds remaining in the first half the Rams responded with a 42-
yard field goal by Ben DeLine.
Turbin scored the first of his TD at the 10:36 mark of the third period, a
three-yard effort that made the score 14-3.
Midway through the third CSU's Shaquil Barrett recovered a fumble and returned
it 15 yards to cut the deficit to 14-10.
Early in the fourth DeLine struck again for the Rams with a 38-yard field
goal, leaving the visitors just one point behind.
With under five minutes left in regulation Turbin capped an eight-play drive
with a one-yard TD to make the score 21-13.
With just 42 seconds remaining in the fourth, a short field allowed Colorado
State to battle back with a one-yard TD run by Nwoke, a successful two-point
conversion from Thomas to Crockett Gillmore locking the score at 21-21 and
sending the meeting into the first overtime.
Utah State struck first, thanks to a nine-yard touchdown run by Turbin, but on
the next possession Thomas and Gillmore combined on a seven-yard TD strike to
make the score 28-28.
The Rams turned to Nwoke in the second overtime as the running back crossed
the goal line from two yards out to give CSU the edge at 35-28.
Immediately the Aggies responded, thanks to a 25-yard TD run by Turbin, but
instead of playing it safe USU tried to reward the home crowd with a thrilling
victory that simply did not pan out.
Utah State gained 281 yards on the ground in the meeting, but finished with
just 367 yards overall as the team fumbled the ball five times and lost
possession on all but one of those mishaps.
